Slider and nickname "King Felix"

First of all, it's simply not true that the team "won't allow" him to throw his slider. He threw it a handful of times in Tacoma, as witnessed by several people, me included. He also threw it twice against Minnesota. While they discourage it's use, he can and has thrown it. Obviously, he doesn't need it to succeed, which is why they don't want him to quickly develop the pitch.

Second, if Barker didn't come up with the name, then either Zumsteg or Cameron did since they were the only other writers for USSM at the time. If those two didn't, then it isn't appropriate to say USSM "invented" the nickname. Finding out who actually coined the term would be helpful.- CiTrusD

Zumsteg says Cameron did, but Barker was the first one to use it publicly [1]. Rather than get into that in the article, I think it's easier just to credit the blog itself. I think "invented" is acceptable unless somebody has a competing claim. --Michael Snow 02:28, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. I guess my preference would be to name him, but I am not going to bother with a revert war.
I'd be more inclined to give that level of detail in an article about USS Mariner itself, since inventing the nickname is one of its claims to fame. In an article about Felix, the origin of the nickname is trivia, and anywhere else if the association is brought up, it's invariably mentioned in connection with USS Mariner as an entity without bothering about who the authors happen to be. And if USS Mariner had an article, adding that link here would put the added detail one click away. Anyway, fighting over this would definitely qualify as a lame edit war. --[[User:Michael Snow|02:52, 17 August 2005

Lackey[edit]

youngest player to play in the majors since 1984?? I don't think so, didn't John Lackey start game seven of the 2002 world series at age 18???

No, Lackey turned 24 in 2002. - CiTrusD

Maybe they had Francisco Rodríguez in mind, but even he was 20. --Michael Snow 02:38, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

How Much?[edit]

Given that he just beat Matsuzaka, I would be interested to know how much he is earning?Andycjp 02:12, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

His contract was renewed at $420,000. --Michael Snow 03:11, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

LeBron James[edit]

Somebody took out the mention of this, but I think it's useful to point to him as setting the trend for nicknaming teenage phenoms "King ..." even before they've earned it. --Michael Snow 03:11, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not Resigning Top Free Agents?[edit]

Who the heck are Justin Johnson and Eric Fischer? That should be Jamie Moyer and Gil Meche. I am amending that so it makes a modicum of sense.

It was vandalism, but those aren't the right names either, Moyer was already gone to the Phillies and the Mariners made little effort to re-sign Meche. The original reference was actually to Zito and Schmidt. --Michael Snow 16:38, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That makes sense. Moyer and Meche would make sense in addition, as the failure of the M's to re-sign those meant that Hernandez moved up the ladder by default, even if he was going to do so anyway. Either way the section makes more sense now. Chancat74 20:32, 12 April 2007 (UTC)Chancat74[reply]

Slider[edit]

This was brought up earlier but I don't think it was discussed. I strongly think that the part about his slider should be removed because when I was watching his one-hitter he was throwing it very succsesfully and alot in the low 90s late in the game.somefatguy 01:22, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The current description is roughly what it was a couple years ago when the article was started. At that point all reports were that Felix's slider was rarely or never thrown at the behest of the team, making it a bit like Matsuzaka's gyroball, unconfirmed and the subject of much speculation. At the same time, I don't think personal diagnosis based on television viewing is the kind of thing we want to go on. If he is using it now, I wouldn't say he's using it a lot. Pitch terminology varies, but velocity in the 90s with movement is often associated with a two-seam fastball, which is usually slightly slower than a straight four-seam fastball but faster than a slider. I'll see if there are sources that have some more current discussion of his pitch repertoire. --Michael Snow 23:15, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

nickname in lede[edit]

There's now too much stuff on the nickname in the lede; obviously it is not of such importance, although some mention would be appropriate. The other stuff should be moved into the main article. --C S (Talk) 19:39, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that as a topic, the discussion of the nickname needs to be kept together, and it doesn't mesh well with the chronological structure for the rest of the article. As his career progresses, it will hopefully become clearer what should be in the opening summary, and some of what's there now may work better as independent sections when that happens. --Michael Snow 16:28, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Succession box[edit]

First of all, I'm not convinced that having "succession boxes" for things like the youngest player in the AL is a good idea. At any rate, they need to be correct, and this one wasn't. It failed to take into account Phil Hughes, who is younger than Felix and therefore held the title for at least some time earlier this year. Whether it should go back to Felix while Hughes was on the DL, especially when rehabbing in the minors, would need to be sorted out as well. But trying to deal with such issues and a rather fluid state of affairs is why I think it produces too much complexity, and is best avoided. --Michael Snow 22:30, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Age?[edit]

Can anyone change his age in the box under his picture? He's not 22 anymore since his birthday passed.--Aquagreen (talk) 21:34, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how to do it.--Aquagreen (talk) 21:35, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's correct. He's born in '86 and its 2008. He's 22. JustSomeRandomGuy32 (talk) 21:43, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nickname[edit]

The lead previously said that one of Felix's nicknames is "The Monorail". As a devout Felix fan, this surprised me since I've never heard it before. A Google search turned up only Wikipedia and pages that get their content from Wikipedia. Shortly later, my edit was reverted and a link was added to one of these clone pages as a reference. Obviously this is not a reliable or independent source, since it is just Wikipedia text used to cite a claim on Wikipedia... I figured I'd drop a line here to hopefully avoid an edit war. walkie (talk) 11:50, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

To respond to earlier posts on this Talk page: The earliest public mention of "King Felix" I could find is a post on the USS Mariner website, July 17, 2003 (www.ussmariner.com/2003/07/17/373/):

"JMB · July 17, 2003 at 8:59 am · Filed Under Mariners All hail King Felix. Hernandez worked five innings last night against Spokane, allowing just one run on two hits and striking out five. He also walked four, but it’s important to remember that he’s only 17 and facing much older competition, including some college players. I’m trying not to get too excited about him, but it’s difficult not to with the way he’s pitched so far."

As a long time mariners (and king felix) fan, I've never come across "king hernandez". Citation needed there, I think, or delete it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.18.252.235 (talk) 01:44, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"King's Court"[edit]

Could someone post a picture of the yellow-shirted fans waving "K" (strikeout) cards in "King's Court"? Thank you, Yoninah (talk) 19:06, 14 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
