Start in 1989

Well, 1989 is sourced for now. But it is not unthinkable that rsssf is incomplete wrong and others wrote of wikipedia/rsssf. So, when the user added 1987 Benfica as winners, there was no source provided. Knowing the winners, maybe a source of Benfica winning the cup/another cup could be found. I don't really get onlinenewspaper searches, but if we could find a article about the 1989 final maybe we would get insight. -Koppapa (talk) 08:25, 19 January 2016 (UTC)

Well, most of the stuff in the Benfica article - the blarney about Eusebio etc. - is sourced to Foot.ie. You might well question why a Wikipedia article has been hung on a 'reference' which is a post from some random guy on the foot.ie forum, but that's another issue! Our excitable friend seems to regard this reference as ok for some things, while studiously ignoring the bit which says Benfica won the Cup in 87 and 89? • Glad to see a little bit of common sense is prevailing. If there is any evidence of a 1987 final it will more than likely be in the Irish Times archive. The foot.ie source is okay as a starting point, the Blarney about Benfica is credible. However a 1987 final is not as I mentioned several times before THREE other source contradict it and you have failed to produce even the slightest bit of evidence of it occurring. Me excitable ? There are a few match reports in the Irish Times of "Women's FAI Cup finals" before 1989; October 10th 1985 page 3 Rathfarnham - Belvedere YC 2-0, September 21th 1987 page 4 Benefica (Uh??) - Boyne Rovers 3-2, the 1984 final was between Dublin Castle and Cork Rangers, but I can't find a result. October 3rd 1983 page 16 Glade Celtic- Dublin Castle 2-0 (Second goal Helena Stapleton, Frank's sister) , Dublin Castle won it in 1982 (preview of the 1983 Final Irish Times 29th September 1983). I hope there are better sources than the Irish Times, because I doubt you'll find all finals in this newspaper. Cattivi (talk) 17:48, 18 April 2016 (UTC)

• @Cattivi: @Koppapa: I have looked on the Irish Newspaper Archive which includes other national papers and Irish regional newspapers. Found some new info and now concur pre-1989 finals are legit. Came across some more finalists which I will add when I get chance. Also came across a Ladies League of Ireland active in 1970s and 1980s. It featured teams from Cork, Waterford, Limerick, Dublin and Galway. Anybody else heard of this league ? These archives have loads of reports on women's soccer. Not free, but you access it for 24 hours for just 10euros. I have found reports that suggest this cup was actually played as early 1968 and that Anne O'Brien played in a 1973 or 1974 final. It's mainly Irish related but is probable that Scottish results are also reported. DjlnDjln (talk) 14:29, 7 May 2016 (UTC)

I've found another small article in the Irish Times 12 September 1981 page 3. In 1980 Suffragettes beat Rathfarnham 4-1. The 1981 final was between the same clubs. Cattivi (talk) 17:18, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

@Cattivi: I have added in above finals. From archives I have read I believe Dublin Castle won the cup twice in late 1970s. Not sure of exact years. Hope this helps, DjlnDjln (talk) 20:19, 10 May 2016 (UTC)
