Soweto[edit]

Looking at Soccer City's location, I'd say it's closer to Johannesburg to me, unless there's some kind of political boundary? Bezuidenhout (talk) 18:25, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Soccer city is in the suburb of Nazrec, just east of the N1 and north of the N12. To the best of my knowledge these highways are the eastern and northern boundaries of Soweto, so that will leave the the stadium just outside Soweto. However, finding a reliable online ref for borders of the subdivisions/suburbs of the City of Johannesburg is rather a challenge. --NJR_ZA (talk) 19:09, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

To the best of my knowledge, Soweto is part of Johannesburg. It was once administered separately, during Apartheid, but today it, like Sandton, is no longer separate.--Life in General (talk) 13:02, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Soccer City capacity issue[edit]

I have noticed that there have been a conflict over the capacity of the Soccer City Stadium. In one edit, the capacity is listed as 94,700. Another edit lists the capacity as 91,141. This probably constitutes a fact conflict. Soccer City is an all-seater stadium now, so I'm going to go ahead side with the 91,141 capacity. If anyone changes the stadium's capacity back to 94,700 and I have to keep over reverting it, than that would constitute edit warring and we don't want that to happen. I think that 94 700 was the originally planned capacity. From what I have read the capacity was reduced during the re-building process. I have seen estimates ranging from 89 000 to 94 700. Crazydude22 (talk) 15:27, 15 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Caption on File:Soccer-City-Stadium-at-capacity.jpg[edit]

The caption on File:Soccer-City-Stadium-at-capacity.jpg reads as "A friendly between South Africa and Colombia at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.", which is nonsensical. The caption is self-contradictory: a match can either be a friendly or a tournament match. Friendlies are games which are played simply for exhibition and are not part of any organized tournament, thus any game at the World Cup is not a friendly. Also, South Africa did play Colombia, but it was an international friendly match, which means it was certainly not part of the World Cup in any sense. Colombia does not meet South Africa in the World Cup, nor did it even qualify, so this is a picture of the international friendly on 27 May 2010, 2 weeks before the opening game of the World Cup (which did involve South Africa, but versus Mexico). The caption should be relabeled as "A friendly between South Africa and Colombia prior to the 2010 FIFA World Cup", or something to that effect. - Ryandinho14 (talk) 17:42, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Springbok rugby to be played at stadium[edit]

Wellington - All Blacks coach Graham Henry has inadvertently revealed New Zealand and South Africa will play their Tri-Nations rugby match on August 21 at the Soccer City stadium in Soweto.

South African officials have yet to announce their decision to move the match from Ellis Park in Johannesburg to the 95 000-seat Soweto venue of this month's football World Cup final.

Henry let slip the information Friday in an interview with the stuff.co.nz website. He confirmed the venue for the match in answer to a question then recognized his error and sought advice from the All Blacks' media manager.

"Yeah, that's official isn't it," Henry said, before turning to media manager Joe Locke and asking "am I allowed top say that Joe?

"I've just said it, haven't I? It's been speculated ... no, I'm not allowed to say that. No, it's only speculated we're playing in a stadium that holds 97 000. Gee, that would be great, wouldn't it? I can't wait."

The South African Rugby Union was expected to announce the move in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

I've noticed that over the last few days information about the match being played was added, and then removed. Christian Event[edit]

There is no credible source cited for the attendance. This portion of the article is written in a different style than the rest, giving the impression of bias toward the event. Currently this portion of the article is written as such.

"On Friday March 11, 2011 Christ Embassy held a crusade "Night of Bliss with Pastor Chris".[16] [17] The FNB Stadium witnessed an unusual crowd with all the stands and field filled to capacity, with over 80,000 participants.[18] [19] [20]"

These citations do not actually belong with the text. The text should read something more like this given the citations annotated.

"Chris Oyakhilome of Christ Embassy held an all night event on March 11, 2011 called "A Night of Bliss with Pastor Chris". [16][17] Many attendees arrived the night before and slept in their cars awaiting the event. The roads in front of the stadium had to be blocked off, with police diverting traffic away from the stadium.[18][20]"

You can try putting in something regarding to the "stands and field filled to capacity," but none of the cited sources really cover this. The closest coverage would be 17, where in the video they speak of a full stadium, however the only numbers they throw out are "millions of participants." Previously stated in the article is the capacity of the stadium, which is less than 100,000. Not to say millions did not participate (I don't know, I wasn't there), but that would be over capacity. It could be possible to say "The participants were so many, that they spilled into the parking lots and surrounding areas of the stadium" again attributed to the video from 17.

Source 19 is a youtube video with no relevance merit for this article except maybe to show the crowd. However, it has a strong religious overtone, which leads (this portion of) the article back to bias. Also, it may be better to call this section of the article "Religious Event" or "Religious Events," but that is likely coming from my own bias toward ambiguity.

The result of the move request was: moved. It looks like this was moved here about a year ago with the argument that "Court case has determined that the name FNB Stadium still stands." The move should not have happened[edit]

This should have been brought up at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football‎ and other projects to garner additional discussion. This is not the common name for the stadium. It was temporarily named Soccer City for the tournament. I trust that there are no plans to move Rogers Arena which was renamed Canada Hockey Place during the 2010 Winter Olympics. To be fair, the page move request was added to the list of page move requests at WP:FOOTY on the same day it was instigated, so the project was notified. Objection withdrawn on original ground. It still makes no sense that the common exonym should be the common name and not the endonym. Not in common parlance, at least in reliable sources I've seen in English (admittedly all from the World Cup, but when a subject is most well-known for one event it's obvious that most sources on that subject will be in that context). I live in South Africa. Both "FNB Stadium" and "Soccer City" are used in spoken conversation. In the press, "FNB Stadium" is used almost exclusively. Look at this article for example: http://www.kickoff.com/news/25942/recalling-the-1995-final-between-wits-and-orlando-pirates.php. All events are marketed as being at "FNB Stadium". "Soccer City" is just a nickname, not the common name, and was only official for a few months around the World Cup in its over 20 year history. No source is quoted for the attendance figures for the concerts. This needs to be verified. There have been conflicting reports about the U2 concert as all the seats were taken and there were several thousand people on the field which should have taken the attendance figures to above 100000. I agree... in the "record attendance" section of the infobox, it says 94,713 and the U2 concert claims an attendance of 100,000 fans based on this article as a citation http://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2011-02-14-u2-in-johannesburg-the-real-greatest-show-on-earth#.UW7W3aKBm2E
