Former constituents

Is there really a need to have former constituents on this page? I took a BOLD action and removed them, and the reverter stated a huge amount of work went into compiling this list and most of it is independently sourced. I do not deny that a large effort was made, but I do have issue with the "sourcing" - almost none of the sources discuss the removal of the company from the list. The list of former constituents is verified only by the FTSE PDF itself. With no independent sourcing for the list itself existing, is there any historical reason to keep this list? The wikipedia list is in alphabetical order which is much more user friendly that the FTSE PDF (which is in date order). If a reader wants to check whether a company is (or was) a FTSE 100 company (and what happened to it) it is so much easier to use the wikipedia list rather than having to open up and then carefully search right through every company on the FTSE PDF. To the best of my knowledge wikipedia is the only place where such an alphabetical list exists so if you delete this list you destroy a valuable resource for investment analysts.
Also, and this is a secondary point, using the wikipedia list as the starting point, I have written a number of articles about former FTSE 100 companies some of which would be rendered orphans (or near orphans) if the wikipedia list were deleted e.g. Globe Investment Trust.
As regards verification, as you say, the wikipedia list is verified by the FTSE PDF itself, but, importantly, all the corporate actions (i.e. actions leading to removal from the FTSE 100) referred to in the wikipedia list are sourced using independent citations. I know this is the case because I painstakingly added almost every one of them (over 160 of them) myself over many months. Incidentally, it is important to understand that if a FTSE 100 company is acquired then, under the Listing Rules, it is automatically removed from listing on the London Stock Exchange and therefore from the FTSE 100 (so the sources do not need to discuss the removal of the company from the list - they only need to confirm that the acquisition took place). In order:
Point 1 - the PDF: the "find" feature works pretty well for finding a specific company. There is no need to "carefully search", just a Ctrl+F search.
Point 2 - Orphans: if the only place that links to a company is this list, then it might be worth linking it from somewhere else. Hell, some of them might not even be notable (WP:LISTED says that simply being on the FTSE is no guarantee of notability).
Point 3 - you make a valid point regarding its removal from the FTSE not necessarily being publicised, especially given the removal rules mean acquisitions make it an auto-removal.
I hate to break out another TLA but per WP:OWN it doesn't really matter how much time or effort you have put into this article, if there's information not worth including then it will be removed. I'm not saying that it will be removed (I'm just one voice advocating for it), but "I've put hours into it" isn't a good reason to keep something and I haven't really seen a good reason to keep the list. I'm open to being persuaded, though. I'm curious to hear what others think about the subject (with 153 page watchers someone must have an opinion). Primefac (talk) 12:00, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
Hi – Thanks for the response. I am aware that there are a high number of page watchers for this article. I can only assume that at least a few of them will be investment analysts accessing the unique resource represented by the alphabetical list of former constituents. If you look at the section headed “Former listed companies” above I think there was a consensus some time ago that (a) it is good to have a list of former FTSE 100 constituents and (b) it would be good to have explanations about why companies left the list.
I fully subscribe to WP:OWN and acknowledge that I do not “own” these articles. Rightly or wrongly, I have kept both this article up to date (including the list of former 100 constituents) and done the same for the FTSE 250 Index article as both articles were very out of date when I first came across them. I am now very happy, after ten years of doing this, to hand them over to you or anyone else who thinks they should contain different (or less) information. Please be prepared to pay a subscription to FTSE Russell as, although in the case of the FTSE 100 they publish the names of additions to the index to replace deletions, in the case of the FTSE 250 they do not.
