Securitization

Why is securitization classified under derivatives? I don't think that most ABS/MBS/CMO are actually derivatives because the assets the cashflows are based on are really part of the legal structure of the deal. There are some areas in CDO/CLO that touch on derivatives or are derivatives, but I think for the most part ABS/MBS/CMO which is the majority of securitized issuance is really much more a part of fixed income than derivatives. Major expansion

Financial Market can be devided in to two categiries e.g initial market & secondary market —Preceding unsigned comment added by 221.120.250.73 (talk) 07:03, 7 June 2010 (UTC) Thobias, you expanded this entry tremendously, which is brilliant. However, your definition now is that of Capital Markets - the market where companies etc. raise funds. I believe Financial markets should include:

  • Capital Markets (consisting of Stock Markets & Bond Markets)
  • Derivatives Markets (including Futures Markets)
  • Currency Markets

Not sure of Secondary Loan Markets should be included. Commodity Markets clearly should not be. But if you read that entry you'll see it's already been taken over by, let's say, people who want to make a point. Your definition is too narrow. But we then still have a problem of how we divide it up. You could also make it:

  • Equity Markets (incl Equity Derivs)
  • Fixed Income Markets (incl swaps etc)
  • Currency Markets

There are over 100 links to this page... think we have to make sure it makes sense. Let me know your thoughts DocendoDiscimus 12:53, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

DocendoDiscimus, feel free to edit the article as you see fit, I don't own it. I've expanded on it slightly. I think it would be useful to include a terse summary of the various constituent markets here explaining where they fit into the context of Financial markets. Most of these constituent markets are deep subjects in themselves and should have their own article, which for many there already are. Thobius 18:32, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

Mergers???

I don't see any discussion on the proposed mergers. I also don't see any particular reason for the mergers, there is overlap, the other articles are very short, but I don't see that that means the articles must be merged. I'll remove the tags in about 5 days if nobody objects. Smallbones 16:24, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Infobox Image

Is there a better image which can be found for the image box?

It is quite confusing when looking at finnacial markets other than the NYSE (e.g. NASDAQ and LSE) to see a picture of the front of the NYSE as the main image of the article. Readers who aren't familiar with the various exchanges could be quite easily confused into thinking the NYSE building was that of one of the various other exchanges which use the financial markets infobox.

I think a more general financial markets related image would definitely be preferable. Any ideas? Canderra 03:35, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Perhaps pictures of old fashoned capitalism? Paintings of market traders? Sort of a more abstract and nonspecific thing? --Aliwalla 13:35, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Stock borrowing and repo markets

Should reference be made to the fact that financial markets not only involve buy or sell but also "loan" and "borrow" ? I am thinking about stock borrowing/lending in the equity markets and also the repo/collateral markets, which are considered by some to be an integral part of financial markets. Hedge funds, amongst others, make great use of the stock borrowing and stock lending facilities and many traders use collateral and repo's as part of their techniques to fund their positions. Central banks can also use the repo markets to add or reduce liquidity in the money markets as part of their efforts to ensure stable markets. Dean Armond 11:38, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Finance context vs Economics context

I suggest splitting this article by context i.e. Financial Market (finance) and Financial Market (economics). The article in its present form may be confusing for readers. Most of the article seems to explain the subject in the context of finance but there is some confusing overlap. i.e in the list of financial market types, Commodity Markets are not considered a financial market in the field of finance. 81.103.163.233 18:16, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
