Battle of Az Zawiyah[edit]

Links needs a major overhaul - several seem completely unrelated to the issues allegedly discussed.99.240.131.60 (talk) 06:14, 8 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wouldn't this be decribed as a siege? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.73.141.184 (talk) 12:35, 8 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You can always file a WP:requested move to rename it to Siege of Az Zawiyah if you like. 65.93.12.101 (talk) 08:23, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Qaddafi victory?[edit]

Are we sure? I haven't seen that confirmed yet, and the report speaks only of "a witness" claiming that; AFAIK, the battle is still going on. —Nightstallion 18:47, 8 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't seen it confirmed either. I think the valid description of the situation right now is "unclear". But it's likely going to be difficult to define victory in this situation. Nanobear (talk) 19:19, 8 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just for reference: This source from just an hour ago states Zawiyah is still being fought over, and not yet in Qaddafi's hands. —Nightstallion 22:23, 8 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like the situation is just like in Fallujah or Vukovar where most of the fighting will be over, but sporadic pockets of resistance will still put up a fight for another few weeks before they are all cleared.EkoGraf (talk) 23:29, 8 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That's not what the latest sources say, actually. According to them, the fight is either ongoing or on hold, with the democrats still holding the centre. —Nightstallion 00:27, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, you didn't get what I was saying, I ment was - Yes there is still ongoing fighting but it will probably be over in a day or so but after that there will be clean-up operations house-to-house, and so the battle will probably not compleatly end for a few more weeks. And they're royalists actualy not democrats. :) EkoGraf (talk) 02:53, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The use of the pre-revolution monarchical flag does not mean the rebels are royalists. The Transitional Council in Benghazi has proclaimed a democratic republic. From what I understand the battle is an ebb and flow affair. The regime can use its superior fire power to seize the key areas by day's end but the rebels regroup and retake the same areas by night.99.240.131.60 (talk) 04:34, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The flag rebels use, was the first one the country had after achieving independence from Italy and prior to Gadafi's Regime. Before being adopted across Libya in 1951, the monarchist flag was already that of the eastern region of Cyrenaica from December 1950. Cyrenaica's main city, Benghazi, has led the revolt against Gathafi. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.38.102.179 (talk) 04:42, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It is hard to get trustworthy sources about the battle for the city in particular. The wisest thing is probably to leave it as "ongoing" until there's something unequivocal that says otherwise. Sarejo (talk) 13:58, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Gaddafi victory again?[edit]

How many times has a Gaddafi victory be proclaimed? Just because the government can get 100 people into a square doesn't mean the fighting has ended conclusively. No media sources say the battle is over; they only say that the government has a tenuous hold on the city center. The battle won't be over until skirmishing is finished. So, due to the lack of evidence for a conclusive (ie "it's over") end, this battle is ongoing.--Henohenomoheji (talk) 22:05, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Comunitations with the rebel fighters in the city are shut off since couple days, while their highest rank in command killed in action. Gadafi's loyalists took hold at the city resistance and no major oposition seems possible. Sadly it isn't premature to say the city has fallen although some skirmishes could take place some days after. 83.38.102.179 (talk) 04:59, 13 March 2011 (UTC) AT[reply]

Free Libya Air Force[edit]

As an asset, it never participed in this battle. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.1.141.55 (talkcontribs)

Gaddafist commanders killed?[edit]

Do we actually have sources stating that Gen. Anaqrat and Col. Gaith were killed in action? ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 09:06, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Date of renewed uprising?[edit]

Major news organizations have only began reporting the Az Zawiyah uprising today, but rebel sources had been reporting it by 6 June (ex: [1]). I'm inclined to believe the latter, because reports of the uprising indicated that it had already been going on for at least a few days (Gaddafi forces reacting by sending reinforcements/closing off roads, rebels securing a large portion of the city), and there is no obvious propaganda benefit regarding the date of an uprising (as opposed to, say, claiming the capture of a town or inflicting heavy casualties.) Since no exact dates have been quoted in the article thus far, I'm going to leave the dates vague for now ('early June'), unless others have suggestions. Seleucus (talk) 20:15, 11 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The renewed uprising that started on June 11 should receive its own page as the "Second Battle of Az Zawiyah" — Preceding unsigned comment added by Heresbubba53190 (talkcontribs) 21:25, 11 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Phase 2 vs second battle[edit]

Phase 2 (June 10 – ongoing) should be treated as an separate battle. --93.139.183.26 (talk) 09:02, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Third battle of Az Zawiya?[edit]

At what point do you think we should start another page for Az Zawiya? Seleucus (talk) 20:14, 13 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
