As someone who lives fairly closely to Flemington/Homebush West. Residents I know who live in the suburb of Homebush West refer to the suburb by the name of "Flemington". Most businesses in the area also refer to themselves with that name. The name "Homebush West" is usually just used as a technical term to describe the houses below the train station. I also feel the two pages basically say the name information about the locality confusion. The page "Flemington, New South Wales" almost feels like a duplicate of the "Sydney Markets" page. On an official level, the term "Flemington" is used to describe the area above the train station, but in common speech it is the name of the suburb (WP:COMMONNAME). People in Flemington also tend to nickname the suburb as "Flemo". I feel we should merge the Homebush West page into Flemington and have a paragraph explaining the name issue. Maybe in the opening paragraph we should word it like "Flemington (officially known as Homebush West) is a suburb...". Newfoundbantustan (talk) 03:06, 19 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with all of the above, except that "Homebush West" is the official name and sees some official usage. We have separate articles for all gazetted suburbs, and it would be confusing to users if there isn't a page which is headed "Homebush West, New South Wales".

I suggest that we leave the suburb article pretty much as is, perhaps even beginning as "Flemington, officially "Homebush West", is..."

"Flemington, New South Wales" should then direct to this article, but there then needs to be a prominent paragraph explaining that the official locality of "Flemington" does not cover the traditional town centre, but rather the area of the Sydney Markets, postcode 2129. --49.255.252.131 (talk) 22:48, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I feel it should be reversed and "Homebush West, New South Wales" should be the redirect. As the common name should be the name of the article itself. Keeping Homebush West as the official name of the page will lead to even more confusion.Newfoundbantustan (talk) 09:51, 28 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I can get on board with that if there is consensus support. An example where we use the common name rather than the official name of a suburb is Sydney central business district, whereas the official name of the suburb is just "Sydney". However, this is very exceptional. Most of the time we would use the gazetted name of a gazetted suburb for the article title. --49.255.185.235 (talk) 05:46, 31 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am supportive of the proposal. As mentioned above, there are other articles where we use the common name, rather than the official name, of a suburb. I think it should be implemented by renaming this article to "Flemington, New South Wales", combining the article about the locality into the "Sydney Markets" article, and making the official name of each clear in each article. --49.255.252.131 (talk) 03:08, 27 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
