Name[edit]

Back in June, User:217.204.170.78 changed the spelling in the article (but not the article title) from Foudry Brook to Foundry Brook with the comment Should be spelt foundry see maps.

So I did. On the Ordnance Survey Pathfinder map, at SU697655, the Foudry Brook can clearly be seen spelt without an 'n'. That is good enough for me; I'm changing the spelling in the article back. -- Chris j wood 16:57, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Chris, my older copy of O/S 1:50000 sheet 175 ((c) 1978 2nd series) shows the spelling as Foundry Brook with an 'n' even though my more recent copy ((c) 2006 ed. C2 isbn-13 978-0-319-22920-0)) includes a new 50m contour plus electricity transmission line in squares SU e:68x/69x n:65x, but without the 'n' in the stream's label. I have mailed customerservices@ordnancesurvey.co.uk for comment. Fred, 19-Jul-2013.

Interesting! It could be an OS typo then? Searching sources online shows plenty of references to Foundry brook, as here, here, and herePahazzard (talk) 20:56, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

From Fred 4x4 (talk) 18:06, 1 August 2013 (UTC) I received this today:[reply]

Thank you for your email regarding Foudry Brook.
I have checked our digital archive of leisure maps we have available for both the 1:25 000 Explorer and 1:50 000 Landranger. I can confirm that it is shown as Foudry Brook on the oldest Explorer sheet (1998) and the oldest Landranger sheet (2003.)
Both these series of maps are derived from what we show on our large scale mapping. Unfortunately Ordnance Survey has not held a historical archive since 2008. The majority of maps which were held by Ordnance Survey were distributed between various sites around the country.
I have looked at some historical data on one of our partner’s websites and can also see that it is shown as Foudry Brook on the 1976-1987 1:10 000 map. Unfortunately, none of the older maps are clear enough to show the name. This information can be accessed at the following link:
http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html
Unfortunately, I have been unable to find a map that shows this as Foundry Brook and as we don’t keep any records I will not be able to advise if, when or why a change in the spelling occurred.
I hope this information is of use to you. Thank you for contacting Ordnance Survey.
Kind regards,
