The San Domingo link[edit]

I am not familiar yet with the House of Beauharnais, but I am sure that nobody in this family would have been heirs to the Spanish colony of San Domingo, better known as Santo Domingo colonial. I suspect that the name of the colony is confused here with the French colony on the western side of the island, Saint-Domingue. It is often the case that the name of "San Domingo" is used for both colonies even when they are different (and resulted in two different countries). Perhaps somebody else could trace the connections and make the changes. They are minor, but would require making sure that Mme de La Rochefoucauld, who became dame d'honneur to the empress Josephine, was indeed the heirs of Saint-Domingue. Thanks.
