Serge Gainsbourg quote questionable[edit]

I just removed the purported Serge Gainsbourg quotation about Poupee, which previously read:

Serge Gainsbourg said about the song: "The songs young people turn to for help in their first attempts at discovering what life and love are about, are sung by people too young and inexperienced to be of much help and condemned by their celebrity to find out."

I've replaced it with this very similar quotation from Sylvie Simmons:

Sylvie Simmons wrote that the song is about "the ironies and incongruities inherent in baby pop"--that "the songs young people turn to for help in their first attempts at discovering what life and love are about are sung by people too young and inexperienced themselves to be of much assistance, and condemned by their celebrity to be unlikely to soon find out." [1]

The Gainsbourg quotation is all over the internet. However I cannot find any reliable ultimate source for Gainsbourg as the source of the quote. I have personally verified (via Google Books) that the Simmons book referenced above does include this quote. Of course it is possible that Simmons is quoting, translating, or paraphrasing something that Gainsbourg said at some point. However without the actual reference to back up this as a Gainsbourg quotation I don't believe we should include it in the article.

FWIW the quotation above appears, attributed to Gainsbourg, several thousand times around the internet. However it is quite possible that an inaccurate reference in Wikipedia is the ultimate source of some, many, or even all of these references! In any event, we should not attribute this quote to Gainsbourg in the France Gall or Poupee de cire articles unless we can actually source it to Gainsbourg via some reliable source.

Article Problems[edit]

I put some more work into reducing the problems with unsourced opinion statements, NPOV problems, and so on. Many of these seem to stem from the origins of this article as a direct translation of the French Wikipedia article on Gall. As far as possible I would like to replace the direct and unsourced statements of opinion with quotations and references that give some perspective to Gall's career. FWIW I'm not even sure that some of the opinions in the article are correct, and if so they are quite likely not the only possible interpretation of events. Just for example, was the decline in Gall's career at the late 60s and early 70s really the result of the public reacting negatively to Les Sucettes and some other similarly exploitative songs and videos, combined with and a string of 'flops' with Gainsbourg and others, or could be it be just as easily explained by the natural eclipse of the ye-ye movement combined with ordinary/expected career difficulties as Gall transitions from a teen singer to an adult career? I wasn't there, so I can't say, but it doesn't seem very appropriate for the article to just baldly state a very strong and unsourced opinion on the subject. Perhaps it is all true--but if so, let's source it thoroughly rather than just stating it baldly.

Tracking down and quoting some actual sources, even if their conclusions may also be somewhat debatable, seems a better course of action. I've started to move the article in that direction in a few places.

Also, I've added [citation needed] in a few places throughout the article. The French Wikipedia article has some of the needed quotations and citations, but it takes some work to go through them and figure out how to best apply them to this article.

I don't believe that any German ever thought that F.G. was German. Her heavy French accent made her too obvious a foreigner. Still, she was extremely popular with us in the late 60es and early 70es.

uh she sang in Italian and Spanish too. I have one song, called "Zozoi", that she sings italian and also "Los Años Locos" is spanish. I could upload them or something if you want me to to prove it but i don't know if that is legal. Is it?

This article contains grammatical errors, unverified facts and non-NPOV statements. It's at times confusingly structured - e.g. the 'Cinematic False-Starts' section (which also needs a rename, like many of these subheadings) lists movies she was nearly in, and then a music video made by Godard. Later it mentions she was in a TV movie. I'd be inclined to mention this with the info under about the potential film appearances, and the Godard video elsewhere - e.g. under a Trivia heading or similar.

I've fixed up a few minor errors, but it's a big job. For now, I'm going to mark it with cleanup tags until I can get to it. Meanwhile, if anyone can restructure or at least correct the English in this, please go ahead. -Spikedcandy 16:06, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't seem to get the citation right: the link to a database of the Finnish National Broadcasting company with an entry of the Finnish recording of the Eurovision winner song: http://www.fono.fi/KappaleenTiedot.aspx?kappale=vahanukke&ID=a52798a8-0049-408d-b269-a475b579fcb3. External link has intrusive pop-ups[edit]

The non-official website www.francegall.com listed under External Links has good content, but when opened in Explorer it has multiple intrusive pop-ups for other websites, some of which appear to have adult content. It even has pop-ups that appear when you try to close the window. I'm going to e-mail the owner of the website and ask them to clean up their site within 14 days; otherwise I'm going to delete the link. Fair use rationale for Image:FranceGall4.jpg[edit]

Image:FranceGall4.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. Gall Image Needed[edit]

As you can see from the comments above, the nice looking photo of Gall from an album cover that was included in the article, has now been deleted.

So I again put in the image of Gall from Wikimedia commons (a drawing that was apparently created by a user for the French wikipedia article on Gall). I don't especially like that image but it is available under the right license and at least it does bear a resemblance.

It would be great to have a better photo or drawing of Gall for the article. If you read the requirements, they're quite stiff--nothing like an album cover or publicity photograph will work. It would need to be either a photo that someone has personally taken of Gall (and thus owns the rights to) or a drawing/painting/graphic that someone has personally made & is willing to upload to wikimedia with the right license. Or maybe you have a friend who has taken such a photo or has made (or could make) such a graphic and upload it, giving the requirement permissions? Bhugh (talk) 07:48, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

2016(!) and, still, several aspects of the update of the France Gall page are still unfixed years after their discussion here. As far as images go, Bing Images seem to be more helpful than the Google equivalent to track down a non-commercial photo of France Gall, particularly as 'look-alike' pictures seem much less in evidence than with Google Images. Applying even the most liberating clause to Bing's photos of France, i.e. Free to modify, share and use commercially, one still sees quite a few pics any one of which could grace this page. Does anyone know whether Bing's assurance is be trusted, i.e. are these images freely reproducible? Incidentally, I know where I could get a private photo of France as a much more mature woman—but as her productive period was predominantly 1960s to 1980s, that might be deemed pointless. For better or worse she is primarily known for this song and the controversy around in the English-speaking world, yet the article only mentions it in passing as part of her film career. Why is that?

Sacré Charlemagne[edit]

According to these two wikipedia articles, Gall's single of 'Sacré Charlemagne' spent 2 weeks at No.1 in France in 1964 (List of number-one singles of 1964 (France)) and 7 weeks at No.1 in France in 1965 (List of number-one singles of 1965 (France)), yet this article states it only reached No.2.
