False friends[edit]

While in Catalan "nacionalista" means "regionalist" or "separatist", in English the word "nationalist" has right-wing connotations and is especially confusing in the context of the Spanish Civil War, as the word "nationalist" is commonly used to describe Franco's followers as opposed to the "republicans" - so it's utterly puzzling to read that Francesc Layret was a "nationalist and republican Catalan lawyer".
