Use of the word "liberal"[edit]

This article uses the word "liberal" in several places. "Liberal" has different meanings in different parts of the English speaking world. In the US it means something much closer to social democrat. In Germany (and Australia), it refers to a moderate version of what Americans would call "libertarian." Americans would call German liberals a type of conservative.

Someone needs to replace the word "liberal" with either "leftist", "left-wing", "free market conservative", "social democratic" or the like. 24.61.102.223 (talk) 21:36, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I concur, but most of all I'd like to know how anybody could apply the label "conservative" here. There is no "conservative" stance in Germany even remotely close to British conservatism and even less so to the American variant.

2013: FR has been saved[edit]

The German newspaper that filed for insolvency last November, Frankfurter Rundschau, appears to have been saved after Germany's competition commission approved its takeover by Frankfurt's Allgemeine Zeitung.
But hundreds will lose their jobs. It is reported by Deutsche Welle that only 30 or so of the paper's 450 staff will be invited to stay on.
