Is this *really* a stub? I'm not sure there's that much more to say about the Doctor. I live in Perth, and I can't think of anything else. :-)

contrary to "Contrary to popular belief in other parts of Australia, no one in Perth actually calls the sea breeze the 'Fremantle Doctor'." I think that they do. Perhaps not in Freo. Kids complaining about the heat would be told "The doctor will be here soon!" Perhaps people do now, but only because of publicity over the last 20 or so years. Prior to the America's Cup, no one called it the Fremantle Doctor. I hadn't even heard of it until then, and I was a very regular beach goer with a keen interest in the sea breeze. When the Cup media circus arrived, one of the human interest stories they dug up was that the sea breeze was called the Fremantle Doctor. That started it's general circulation. By the way, the article doesn't mention the commonly given reason for it being called the Doctor: because it arrives as regular as a doctor (doing their rounds, back in the days when doctors had a lot more social status and they actually did do that). maturin (talk) 12:18, 29 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Some years ago either a uni mob, csiro or other institutionally based sceince mon tried to quantify it with a range of tests/scientific thingies - and couldnt come up with a sufficient pattern and said - a bit like the late douglas adams level of logic in his hitchhiker series - because they couldnt find quanifiable patterns it didnt exist. i have no idea (and no I am sure it is not on goggle) where to track the stupid thing down SatuSuro 13:02, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cricket at the WACA and the "Doctor"[edit]

Include something about its effect on Perth culture.[edit]

Perhaps this article could include some reference to Perth's culture. It is the reason why Perth is known as "the windy city", the wind being the regular sea breeze, which leads to much of Perth's water-sports culture.

For example, Perth is over-represented in a per-capita basis in wind-powered water sports, such as sailing, wind-surfing, kiting and so on. The over-representation is at a competitive and professsional level. Much of it is due to the wide Swan River waters, and much of it due to the regular sea breeze, and that the breeze is quite strong.

Perth has always been up there in producing sailing champions such as Rolly Tasker, Ben Lexcen, the skiffs of the early 20th Century, light-weight Sharpies and so on.

One of the reasons Lancelin has had the wind-surfing championship Lancelin Ocean Classic for 25 years is due to the Doctor.

I think a reference to the Doctor's influence on Perth culture is worth a mention, at least.

More limited meaning[edit]

my understanding (from my father who was raised in Perth 1916-1942) is that the FD is the particular sea breeze that comes in after a heatwave of several days, thereby curing Perth inhabitants of maladies/moods caused by the heatwave, and coming from the direction of Fremantle after several days of onshore winds without relief. In this meaning, FD does NOT refer to every seabreeze of normal afternoons.

The term was originally "The Fremantle Docker". It was the afternoon sea breeze that was predictable and in the right direction to enable sailing vessles to arrive at the dock in the port of Fremantle.
