Not a big deal, but I'm not sure it's true to say that the FB3 'brighter' or poppier' than late Specials: I found their first album quite dark on first listen. Their image was lighter, definitely, but the music was an extension of the mood set by some tracks off More Specials. The Lunatics, for example, could have (and probably would have, but for the split) fitted straight in with the Specials' set. Any opinions? Pollythewasp (talk) 16:08, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, it surprised me to read that too. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.203.72.169 (talk) 22:13, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Contradiction[edit]

The first sentence of the History section makes no sense: "The Fun Boy Three dispensed with the ska, pop and lounge sounds...still retaining elements of ska and pop." Did they dispense with them or did they retain them? I'm not knowledgeable enough to guess what the sentence is trying to say. Can somebody else clarify? Good point! I think "reduced" would be better than "dispensed with". The difference is the instrumentation as much as anything - The Specials had the guitar and horns usually associated with ska, while The Fun Boy Three initially took a minimal approach with a focus on percussion. For example, the backing track for their biggest hit "It Aint What You Do It's The Way That You Do It" is just drums, synthesised bass, and a xylophone - and that's actually quite representative of their approach at the time. For the second album they assembled a full backing band, and generally had a more recognisably new wave pop outlook. --Walnuts go kapow (talk) 12:04, 18 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Now that I think about it, is it at all true to say that they reduced the pop and lounge sounds? I don't know the albums, only the singles, but the singles were pure pop, and "It Ain't What You Do" is closer to my idea of lounge music than anything The Specials ever did.
