National Opera?[edit]

1954, he went to Australia and became resident conductor of its National Opera before joining the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust Opera in 1957.

What was this "National Opera" that existed prior to 1957. To my knowledge, there was no such animal. -- JackofOz 01:58, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The National Opera of Australia (also known as the National Opera of New South Wales) was created by Clarice Lorenz in 1948, began performances in 1952, and existed (formally) until 1957, although the company ceased giving capital-city performances in 1955. Its Melbourne counterpart was Gertrude Johnson's National Theatre Movement. The NOA was NOT the same thing as the Elizabethan Trust, nor was it the forerunner of it, as is often claimed in Australian literature. The Trust merely took over its remnants in 1957, and made a few legal changes not of interest here. Tanya Tintner (talk) 18:59, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Tanya. There's always so much to learn. In that case, we'd better change the wording from "its National Opera" (which reads as an opera company owned or administered by the Australian government) to "the National Opera of Australia (a private company)". I'll do that. -- JackofOz (talk) 21:51, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
