I had to remove the link to Daniel Brandt's site, because the article was literally uneditable with it in. Wikipedia's spam filter is being anal.--KrossTalk 07:28, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Voice against escalation?[edit]

The claim that George Ball was a major voice against escalation during the Vietnam War is one that is promoted in David Halberstam's The Best and the Brightest; Mary McCarthy pours scorn on this idea in her caustic review of this book, "Sons of the Morning" (collected, I think, in her book The 17th Parallel.) She refers to George Ball memos in the so-called Pentagon Papers (which were published after Halberstam) which -- as she claims -- decisively refute Halberstam's portrait of Ball. 137.82.188.68 01:52, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In the Ken Burns' Vietnam documentary (airing on PBS, 19SEP17) at approx 1:20 Ball is quoted. I only caught it en passant, but something like ""troops will get bogged down as we blow the country to pieces". I noted that under LBJ's "What we have is what we've had since '54." which is 1964 but I'm not sure the Ball statement is in that year. I'm spidering that now. --BenTrem (talk) 07:05, 20 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

He was pretty adament and would prove right in his educated guess, the direct quote is: "The war could not be won. The american people will grow weary of it. Our troops will get bogged down in the jungles and rice paddies, while we slowly blow the country to pieces."

Incorrect dates[edit]

The “winter of 1965-1966 “ when Ball argued against bombing Hanoi was actually a year earlier, 1964-1965. Ray.finucane (talk) 06:03, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
