Irish

Like all British construction companies, Wimpeys employed a lot of Irishmen. Some wag such as this one claimed that their name was an acronym for "we employ more Paddys every year". The Irish, being Irish, read it backwards as "you English pigs make Irishmen work". See also McAlpine's Fusiliers. -- 91.104.100.225 (talk) 22:21, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

"we employ more Paddys every year" would leave us with WEMPEY. "We Import More Paddies Each Year" would give us WIMPEY. I speak as an Irish former Wimpey employee. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.152.252.93 (talk) 14:35, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

Revisions

I am continuing to revise the Wimpey page, which was very patchy. The reference to Wimpey City has been taken out - this was just a label stuck on some London sites and the web link no longer exists. I see that there is a separate entry for Wimpey City and I suggest deleting it completely. It was never more than an extremely small part of Wimpey and if you have that as a separate entry, you could have entries for several hundred other bits of Wimpey.Bebington (talk) 17:48, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

I am concerned about the “operations” section of the Wimpey article. None of it is sourced (although the construction contracts mentioned are linked). By virtue of the Taylor Woodrow merger, the use of the present tense is wrong. The housebuilding in particular concerns me: it is part historical (the unsourced completions for the 1970s) and part a discussions of brands they had a few years ago, many of which were temporary while they were being integrated. I have no idea whether the lists of contracts is representative. Wimpey Minerals was never one of the largest aggregate producers in the UK – it would have been at the top of the second tier. North America has now become outdated as a result of the Taylor Woodrow merger. If it is history it has no mention of Canada which the mainstay of the North American operations long before it bought Morrison. What is the relevance of 2005 figures. What does “today” mean, three years after the merger? Personally, I would scrap the whole of the Operations section. Bebington (talk) 08:35, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

How is "Wimpey" pronounced?

Per the subject line. Another article claims that "Wimpey" is not pronounced the same as "wimpy", and frankly I'm a bit dubious. If it's not pronounced as "wimpy", how is it pronounced?--Martin IIIa (talk) 15:54, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
