Gerald Arpino studied with Ivan Novikoff

Gerald Arpino and Robert Joffrey were students of Ivan Novikoff in Seattle in the l940's. I was a student there too. We entertained servicemen during World War II, so I think we must have met during the last year or so of that war. This was before Gerald and Bobby studied with Mary Ann Wells, so the statement that they met at Wells' school is an error. But it was an error they allowed to stand, probably because of a disagreement with Novikoff.

Gerry and Bobby told the other students that they were cousins, so if this was true, they probably met in New York before they came to Seattle.

I knew them for years, and saw Bobby later in his life when he came to a Novikoff performance in Seattle, and I think his presence there indicated that he and Novikoff reconciled in the latter years of their lives.

Bobby's partner at Novikoff's was Joanne Kirberger, who married and died in childbirth in Seattle. We were kids together, and all of this is true, and I put it here for old time's sake.

Gerald Arpino and Robert Joffrey first studied dance with Ivan Novikoff in Seattle, as did I. Later, Gerry and Bobby went to Mary Anne Wells' school, but that was not where they met. They might have met at Novikoff's, but since they said they were cousins, it is quite possible they met long before they were students at Novikoff's. I guess they denied that Novikoff was their teacher because of some disagreement with him. I do not know what it was. I too studied with Mary Ann Wells and knew Robert Joffrey over a number of years, as well as Gerry. Mariel
