"However Haxton as a citizen of the United States was deported from Britain in 1919 as an undesirable alien." Implies all Americans were undesirable aliens. Gerald's probem with the law was not that he was American, but that he...what? Nobody knows. From time to time friends of Maugham's would approach powerful men saying Can't something be done about Gerald? and the answer would come back No...... It should be just about out from the Official Secrets Act by now, and perhaps Gerr's secret is a secret no longer. But deported for being an American, no. PiCo 12:48, 5 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I had a quick read of that section (bought Morgan on the weekend). Not the hotel incident (they were acquitted and he wasn't deported until some years later) - but Morgan refers to what some official told him when he tried to press the point, about Haxton being a Belgium spy. We can't know until 2019 - and by then wiki will be 3 dimensional or something. More seriously though Belgium spy makes possible sense if you think of Maugham's spying role but then loses some reasoning if you think that they stayed together long after Maugham was in the James Bond game. The thought of spying for Belgium! How low can you go! He'll be offering his services to Lichenstein next! Seriously, if he was a Belgian spy, it makes sense - a spy is a spy - but by the time Willie was spying for Britain, Belgium was under German occupation and Haxton's putative nefariousness wouldn't have been a threat to Whitehall and they wouldn't have been too concerned provided Willie could assure them that he, Willie, was reliable and discreet - which he was. Tuberculosis[edit]

Haxton was treated in Saranac Lake for tuberculosis, and Maugham is known to have visited him there. Deserves a mention. --Mwanner | Talk 00:33, 13 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Word missing?[edit]

'Haxton left the country shortly thereafter, and on attempting to [xxx?] in February 1919 he was deported from Britain as an undesirable alien and was never allowed to enter the country again. Valetude (talk) 14:33, 15 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
