More references & resources needed[edit]

This is really frustrating. Everyone (in the dog world) talks about "giant breeds" and knows what their sizes and issues and breeds are, but it's proving to be very difficult to find any kind of useful information about what a giant breed is, what their health issues are, or anything else other than in very general terms (e.g., "giant breed rescue group...we specialize in giant breeds" and the such, which isn't helpful at all!). Worrying Statement with Article[edit]

Hi there. I'm a pre-veterinary student/veterinary assistant, and I'm quite a bit perturbed about this article stating that giant breeds might make good apartment dogs. I don't wish to dismantle the entire page, but giant breeds not only do require a fair bit of exercise (and often things like hydrotherapy to maintain their joints) but they are prone to separation anxiety and can be quite destructive to small enclosures, even if on accident. Very few dogs are suitable for apartments, and giant breeds are definitely not one of them, if you ask almost any veterinarian. If you would like some more information on giant breeds for references, I can see what I can dig up for you at work if you like. Would you mind terribly if I change some things around on this page? Suggestions for improving this article[edit]

This is a collection of dog breeds that's useful because they have common traits; "giant breeds" is a common term for large breeds, which tend to have their own issues. Yet they are not all of the same type: herding, guarding, etc. This article needs more work, maybe a list of such breeds? And to have such breeds link to it. And needs more medical info; there is a lot around. That's the biggest (heh) thing with these breeds: Bodies can't handle being big: heart and musculo-skeletal issues in particular. Elf, I agree there is room to build with this article but unless something is specifically cited to a source that describes whatever is included as pertaining to giant dog breeds, it turns into a free-for-all of OR. The breeds currently listed are the only ones I can find that are described in reliable sources as "giant breeds". And I agree most examples have common health complaints, but not universally, only in the examples that are bred for their exaggerated size, often more responsible breeders that stick to more manageable dimensions breed dogs free of these issues. Whilst it may appear the article is missing some information, here on Wikipedia everything needs to be cited to a reliable source. Large amounts of what you have added is unsourced, and the of the sources you have added, this appears to be self-published and this appears to be sponsored content. The American Kennel Club is renowned for publishing inaccuracies and are only appropriate to cite as a primary source for AKC standards and activities, but further this does not mention giant breeds and this only lists Great Danes, St. Bernards and Mastiffs as giant breeds.
