The Glasgow and Clyde Valley city region is an area of Scotland established in 2014 by the Glasgow and Clyde Valley City Deal, an agreement between the UK and Scottish governments and the eight local authorities of the City of Glasgow, East Dunbartonshire, West Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire, Inverclyde, North Lanarkshire and South Lanarkshire.[1]

The city region has an estimated population of 1,750,500 [2][3], around a third of the total population of Scotland.[4]

Governance[edit]

The city deal stipulated that the constituent authorities create a model of governance to streamline and strengthen partnerships between them. It established a Glasgow and Clyde Valley Cabinet as the ultimate decision making body within the structure, as well as numerous inter-authority bodies tasked with supporting its work.

Glasgow and Clyde Valley Cabinet[edit]

The Glasgow and Clyde Valley Cabinet consists of the leaders of the eight local authorities in the city region. The cabinet is required to meet quarterly and its inaugural meeting was held on 20th January 2015 at Glasgow City Chambers.[5][6] The leader of Glasgow City Council is automatically the Chair of the Cabinet and acts as the designated contact for both UK Government and Scottish Government ministers regarding the implementation of the City Deal. The first and current Chair of the Cabinet is Gordon Matheson.[7][8]
