Vandalism The edit "Miley rode Fidelma all around the farm" on 13:02, 24 November 2006 by 140.203.7.37 appears to be vandalism, but I don't know enough about the subject matter to know. HectorH 13:09, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

With the help of Robin Carmody and the Times Digital Archive, I have added a table for UK regional transmission of Glenroe based on its transmission on the ITV network until 1985. Can anyone help complete or expand on the data in the table?

Coming from the region, I remember UTV showing the series from the start, beginning in 1989 in an early afternoon slot before CITV, but they only reached up to around 1994 episodes by the time they gave up on it sometime in 2001 - can anyone elaborate on how UTV ran with Glenroe?

Also, can anyone confirm if Glenroe was shown in other countries? Cheers. Col2006ie 11:03, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was in Australia in 1998 and it was being shown on one of the channels then. Taiwanlight Zone

Theme tune[edit]

The sentence 'Glenroe's theme tune was written and arranged by Jim Lockhart of Horslips' is not true. He may have arranged it but the tune is that of a traditional song called Cuaichín Ghleann Néifinn (The Little Cuckoo of Glen Nephin). I am going to amend the article accordingly. New Edits - Enriching this article[edit]

Removing the info below as it seems dubious / unresolved, with lots of ??? question marks. Starting with 'scheduling' down to end of table.

Scheduling[edit]

Original broadcast[edit]

RTÉ One. Sundays. 8:30 p m.

International broadcasts[edit]

The show was also successful outside Ireland, although Glenroe was not networked, 13 of the 14 ITV regions had transmitted the series in the United Kingdom. After this point listings (which have been sourced from The Times Digital Archive) are no longer available.

  • In December 1995, as part of a soap opera-themed weekend, Channel 4 broadcast an episode of Glenroe.
  • During the late 1990s Glenroe was also shown on the Tara Television network in the United Kingdom via cable and SkyDigital from 1997 to the closure of the station in 2002. Classic episodes were shown in the daytime and repeated in the early evenings on weekdays, and current episodes were simulcast with RTÉ on Sunday evenings during each season. Tara had reached the 1992/93 season of Glenroe at the time of the station's closure.

Spin-offs and merchandise[edit]

There was excitement in Dundalk on 24 December 1989 when the episode screened that evening featured two couples from the area who had won a prize from the People in Need Telethon to appear on the show.[1] Brenda Fricker was in that episode.[1] There was also lots of excitement concerning the famous hurling match between Cork and Kilkenny, played in 1984 at Pairc Liam Mc Carthy in Ballygarvan, County Cork. This match featured in the show when Miley travelled down to Cork to attend. He was asked at the last minute to throw in the sliotar at the start of the game.

Joe Lynch libel section[edit]

The following is a chunk of text I've removed from the "Reality vs fiction" section of this page. I have read it several times over and can't figure out what the point is, why the libel suit existed, or why it's in this article. The cited sources aren't online. I gather it has something to do with Joe Lynch being confused with the character he plays on this tv show? If anyone can explain it, or thinks this text should go back into the article, please feel free. (Let me know before you do, and I'll fix its errors.) Thanks. Jessicapierce (talk) 21:42, 23 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The Evening press, a tabloid which competed with the Evening Herald in the 1980’s ran a story about the actor Joe Lynch which was then the cause of controversy. Joe Lynch, who in 1986 was booked through his agent for his presence at a PR event, successfully sued Michael O’Toole in the wake of a piece in the Evening Press which implied that Mr Lynch, the Actor, simply failed to turn up for the event. Lynch successfully and actively defended himself and the negative implications of the piece. Paul Muldowney in The Irish Press, 1989 wrote that Mr Lynch was “…libelled in the Evening Press on March 22, 1986, when it was alleged he left “60 disappointed punters in the lurch”, when he failed to turn up for a Cabaret booking in the Ashling hotel , on March 19, 1986, organised by the guild of Agricultural Journalists.”, by the now deceased columnist Michael O’Toole.[1]

Paul Maddock in the Irish Independent 1989, relayed how the actor had won “…damages of £25,000. in the High Court” which ruled in his favour. The actor was happy his name had been cleared after what he deemed to be a smear campaign.[2]
