Golborne is a Village by definition.[edit]

[1]

As you will see it states "The village of Golborne is near the centre of the township, on the north side of the brook. A road from Warrington to Wigan passes through it, and is there joined by another from Newton; there are also cross-roads between Ashton and Lowton."

Golborne is a Village. We do not have a Town hall, Nor a Mayor, Nor a Market which should all be required to legally define it as a "Town" it is a large village. EditingpagesGolborne (talk) 22:44, 23 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A more up to date reference, [2] The local authority considers it to be a town. J3Mrs (talk) 22:46, 23 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Quite. Mr Stephen (talk) 22:51, 23 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Regardless of what the "local authority" thinks it is and always has been a mining village. Just wishing it was a town doesn't make it such, The local sources thatshould be in place are not No market square, No town hall and no mayor. [1] "In modern official usage the term town is employed either for old market towns, or for settlements which have a town council, or for settlements which elsewhere would be classed a city, but which do not have the legal right to call themselves such. Any parish council can decide to describe itself as a town council, but this will usually only apply to the smallest "towns" (because larger towns will be larger than a single civil parish)." We do not have a town council or a Market. EditingpagesGolborne (talk) 22:59, 23 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The thing is Wikipedia relies upon what reliable sources say. This means that if the local authority says Golborne is a town, Wikipedia is probably going to describe it as such. If the local authority was to change its stance it would be a different matter; perhaps the issue should be raise with them in case they're willing to update their webpages? The Ordnance Survey gazetteer calls Golborne a town, see Golborne. The User Guide makes it clear that towns and villages are distinct (see page 38). Mr Stephen (talk) 22:33, 24 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That strikes me as conclusive. Nev1 (talk) 22:51, 24 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
