So.....[edit]

Lost in all the discussion of when it's been used and what came before it seems this page seems to have overlooked actually explaining what the hell a golden point is... Anyone know? 87.127.95.194 (talk) 20:42, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What its purpose is, second paragraph "The golden point is used to determine a winner [...] when scores are level at the end of regular time". What constitutes a golden point, third paragraph "Any score (try, penalty goal, or field goal) [...] secures a win for the scoring team"

Association football or soccer?[edit]

There is currently a dispute around the wording of the opening sentence whether it uses association football or soccer. @180.150.79.160: asserts it should be soccer as an Australian invention while I affirm it should be association football as this article has a worldwide scope. I have posted a link to this discussion at WP:FOOTBALL so we can get more input to stop the edit war as we're already on 3rr. The C of E God Save the Queen! "Golden point" appears to be an Australian term, particularly in reference to their rugby league or "Aussie rules" competitions. So using soccer in this context would be more appropriate. Jmorrison230582 (talk) 09:23, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That was my first reaction. If the article is solely on an Australasian term then soccer is appropriate. However, there is a large section on Europe and the lede says nothing about it being an Australian term, which makes association football more appropriate. There is also the argument that the latter is the formal (and more encyclopaedic) name of the sport; this is not the usual football versus soccer argument. Not that it really matters. I'd leave it at whatever the person who originally wrote the sentence put. There is no need to change it, unless they wrote football, which would need disambiguation.   Jts1882 | talk  09:46, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
On that last point, the article has used soccer since June 2005. Is it really necessary to make a change 13 years later?   Jts1882 | talk  09:50, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The whole thing needs a rewrite. I'd go with something like
The golden point is a rule used primarily in rugby to determine a winner in overtime when scores are level after regulation. The term is borrowed from golden goal, a former association football rule. When a competition follows the "golden point" rule, the team which scores first in overtime, regardless of how they scored, wins the game.
That uses association football, as even though it's primarily an Aussie article it's not entirely a local article there are several different football codes which need to be differentiated here. SportingFlyer talk 09:58, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
