Long ball success[edit]

In what way was has his long ball tactics succesful?? Despite numerous high profile jobs he has consistenly underachieved. Its clear POV.

He won promotion with Lincoln, 3 promotions in 5 years at Watford, finished 2nd in the first division, got into europe, Fa Cup finalists, promotion with Villa, finished 2nd in the first division. He then had unsuccessful spells with England and Wolves, got Watford back into the top flight, before a short spell with Villa. If you had bothered to read the article you'd see the massive success he has had in his career, though his time as England manager was unsuccessful. Though you could argue the only successful England manager was Sir Alf Ramsey. Bedders 06:50, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I completley disagree. Firstly his long ball tactics have not been succesful. The clear trend is away from the long ball to the target man. Secondly he is overall regarded as an unsuccesful manager having never won a major trophy despite large financial resources particularly at Villa and Wolves. He is indeed incomparable with Ramsey but not even close to Robson or even Keegan who managed to qualify for a major tournament. When he took over at Villa in 2002 they were intertoto winners who had finished 6th the previous season. In three months he managed to drop them 10 places. They just avoided relegation. I do not want an edit war. I understood you are a Grimsy Fan but you have structured thņis article to a degree that it is clear POV in favour of Taylors reputatuion.

I've not structured this article at all, infact the revert I did was the first time I've touched it, though I've been planning to add an info box for a while now. I'm no fan of Taylors either, he played for the club before I was born and is now vice-president of bloody Scunthorpe! I think his style of football was boring and some of things he did as England manager were laughable. But he was successful, if not quite at the highest level, 3 times he got a club promoted into the top division. Which I think is enough to justify sentence reading "Taylor's long ball style proved partially successful" Bedders 12:54, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
How about "Taylor's long ball style proved successful in gaining promotions for lower-division clubs, but less so when leading top-level teams" or similar? --MartinUK 22:15, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Racism quote[edit]

Was it Taylor who stood up to a fan chanting racist abuse by saying something like "That's a human being you're talking about", or am I thinking of someone else? Lfh 21:49, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah tht's right he did. It was during a match against San Marino at Wembley. England were playing crap and Barnes was getting the stick. It's filmed on the documentry Do I not Like that.

It wasn't racist abuse, it was abuse. Barnes, unfortunately, was never the player that he was for Liverpool when wearing an England shirt (with the exception of that goal against Brazil). England fans were frustrated that he kept getting picked despite not delivering.82.45.66.11 (talk) 22:43, 13 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

– I believe that the football player and manager is the primary usage of the name "Graham Taylor". He made 339 Football League appearances (a season was 42 games), before going on to make his managerial name at Lincoln City (promotion, setting a Football League points record along the way), Watford (five promotions, second place in the top division, an FA Cup final and European qualification) and England (constant coverage from national and international media, for better or worse), later going on to work as a pundit in national television, radio and press, and on Watford's board as a somewhat outspoken club chairman. The baseball player is nowhere near as well known (two MLB appearances in his career – a season is 162 games). I have to admit to knowing little about the politician, but based on him being a provincial policitian and his first name being Douglas, I do not believe him to be an impediment to this set of moves.

I have also included a request to move the author to G. P. Taylor, as I believe that he is far better known under this name, à la J. K. Rowling. —WFCFL wishlist 04:54, 2 December 2012 (UTC) —WFCFL wishlist 04:54, 2 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • I should also add that if this set of moves goes ahead, it would probably be appropriate to add the following hatnote to the footballer's article:

For the author, see G. P. Taylor. For other uses, see Graham Taylor (disambiguation).WFCFL wishlist 05:30, 2 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support per nom, who makes a convincing argument for WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. GiantSnowman 14:06, 3 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - the footballer/manager is the most notable person with this name by the proverbial country mile. Someone told him he wasn't and he said "do I not like that" ;-) -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 22:00, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
