Disputed section[edit]

The fair is not to be confused with the Portland Steam Fair, a similar fair held at Southwell Park on the Isle of Portland every year.

I have removed this sentence twice now as I don't think it is relevant in an article about the GDSF. If Portland Steam Fair had its own WP article, it might be another matter, but it's not the sort of thing that will be seen in other articles. In particular, I cannot see who might be 'confused' between the two events.

Any thoughts?

Incidentally, my only connection with GDSF is as a satisfied customer, and as a steam fan I have nothing against the Portland Steam Fair. My concern is that the GDSF WP article should remain encyclopaedic. Hence the text being removed.

Now found a website for "The Portland Steam & Vintage Show" here.
It is a fraction of the size of GDSF, and takes place on the coast, six weeks earlier. Not much scope for confusion...
...hence removed again.

ITV Meridian video clip[edit]

ITVLocal.com report 2008: Thousands flock to the Great Dorset Steam Fair

Removed as "ITV Spam". This is a valid video clip, but in their incessant need to bow to commercials ITV Local have decided that the desired clip must follow some random advert. Shame. -- EdJogg (talk) 00:18, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Probably just as well to lose it. The clip refuses to load and run for me anyway. I can't even see the advert! Fiddle Faddle (talk) 09:29, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hello... thanks for asking about this. Sorry if my edit summary wasn't clear enough; the link was removed because it is one of many ITV links that were added en masse by single-purpose users and IPs tracing back to ITV itself. Unfortunately, there has been a problem with ITV spam of this type over the past year. Please feel free to ask me if you have any other questions. Cheers. --Ckatzchatspy 18:25, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The West Country Challenge[edit]

Would you like to win up to £250 in Amazon vouchers for participating in The West Country Challenge?

The The West Country Challenge will take place from 8 to 28 August 2016. The idea is to create and improve articles about Bristol, Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, like this one.

The format will be based on Wales's successful Awaken the Dragon which saw over 1000 article improvements and creations and 65 GAs/FAs. As with the Dragon contest, the focus is more on improving core articles and breathing new life into those older stale articles and stubs which might otherwise not get edited in years. All contributions, including new articles, are welcome though.

Work on any of the items at:

or other articles relating to the area.

There will be sub contests focusing on particular areas:

To sign up or get more information visit the contest pages at Wikipedia:WikiProject England/The West Country Challenge.— Rod talk 16:05, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

How many articles have you placed this ad in? Do you plan to remove every single plug afterwards? Vicarage (talk) 21:32, 19 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I put it on the 7 relevant wikiprojects, + county & major town/city articles + a few (like this one) on the core articles list. It is always difficult to get messages to editors likely to be interested in a specific area.— Rod talk 09:48, 20 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
