Lena Zavaroni[edit]

The child singing star Lena Zavaroni was born in Greenock in 1963, I think she should be included in the notable Greenockians paragraph. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.148.33.21 (talk) 23:39, 21 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Romans[edit]

No mention of the roman road or ruins behind the town near Loch Thom? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.87.17.34 (talk) 02:41, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Gallery[edit]

The number of photographs has been steadily increasing and while this is a good thing, they were having a detrimental effect on the text layout. I've reincorporated them into a gallery instead which looks neater.--Augustusr 10:42, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

However to quote WP:IG :
'Wikipedia is not an image repository. A gallery is not a tool to shoehorn images into an article, and a gallery consisting of an indiscriminate collection of images of the article subject should generally either be improved in accordance with the above paragraph or moved to Wikimedia Commons. Links to the Commons categories can be added to the Wikipedia article using the

template. One rule of thumb to consider: if, due to its content, a gallery would only lend itself to a title along the lines of "Gallery" or "Images of [insert article title]", as opposed to a more descriptive title, the gallery should either be revamped or moved to the Commons.'

I've cleaned up some of the text but it could generally do with copy editing, plus more of a WP:Lead section. There shouldn't be so many little diddy sections, the two sentences on hospitals should be part of a more general "Amenities" type section rather than split out into a separate health section. Unsupported stories[edit]

The following stories were added by User:Resistor0 at 14:52, on 8 August 2005. I've not been able to find any evidence for them, despite searching the Daily Telegraph online, and have removed them until support is shown. A note of this action has been put on User talk:Resistor0.

Some fancifully suppose the town's name comes from the words "Green Oak" (as in the folk song The Green Oak Tree). As local legend would have it the Scottish freedom fighter Sir William Wallace allegedly hid in one of these "Green Oak" trees whilst being pursued by English forces.
Its most bizarre resident was covered in an article by The Daily Telegraph in recent years called "The Catman". He is a man of about 60 years who lives in the wild like an animal, travelling barefooted on his hind legs. He has been seen by many and his diet is made up of wild animals he has caught. However the local population occasionally leave food out for him. He has been taken in by social services before for mental illness but he was deemed uncurable and was released.

I have also removed an advertising link for Holiday Inn Greenock, Hotel, which is just spam. ...dave souza: talk 20:20, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have photographic proof of the Catman, I'll glady e-mail you it. I'm adding that story back in. - Mick

Look forward to seeing it. Haven't yet found anyone here who's heard of the story. ...dave souza: talk 01:45, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, convinced now: found someone who knew the tale, and another google found chat pages giving convincing detail in authentic Greenockian patter. However, now have an unsubstantiated rumour that the Catman has moved to one of the western isles (Hebrides). Oddly, the story seems to have been added by a young London nerd, which explains the reference to the Daily Telegraph rather than the Tilly . ...dave souza, talk 10:21, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mothman - Possible Sighting?[edit]

On 10:28, 17 March 2007 user:86.140.187.243 added this exciting tale here and to Thornliebank:

On 15th March 2007, several locals reported seeing a strange "winged" creature around the vicinity of the esplanade. Although these sightings have yet to be confirmed by the analysis of photographic evidence, it is suspected that these sightings could be of the elusive Mothman.

See WP:A for the requirements for verification of such tales. .. dave souza, talk 10:48, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

MyGreenock[edit]

We recently added a link to a new site MyGreenock (http://www.mygreenock.com ) which offers businesses in the Greenock area free advertising. Can you advise why this was tagged link spam?

There will be no google adsense on this site etc, and all businesses can advertise free.

We (Hobo-Web LTD a greenock based based business) expect to install a forum next week. The directory already has over 300 local businesses in it and it is a useful resource.

I removed the link you added as it was advertising and added nothing to the article, this is an encyclopedia and not a vehicle to advertise your site, you may wish to read the policy on links WP:EL. Fraslet 17:53, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's back again, and it's absolutely terrible. You've been asked before not to link spam - it doesn't matter if it's NFP or not, it's still blatantly just advertising. I've removed the link, please don't add it again. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.110.90.75 (talk) 00:48, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Infact, it wasn't your link, but "InverclydeNow". Have done similar. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.110.90.75 (talk) 00:50, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why has the map of Scotland indicating the location of Greenock been removed? Ulysses54 14:05, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Myth[edit]

"pirate Captain Kidd were born in the town"

There's no evidence for this. It's a myth. He was most likely born in Tayside. It needs to be removed, or sourced. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.42.129.123 (talk) 21:31, 20 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reliable source problem with etymology[edit]

Coming up with accurate etymologies is a technical skills that requires education in certain aspects of professional linguistics and history. I have seen that there are quite a few Wikipedians, but by no means all or the majority, who don't quite get that. William J. Watson, Scotland's greatest professional toponymist and chair of Celtic at Edinburgh, viewed the etymology of Greenock as relatively straightforward, as per the citation in the article. That's the professional's view as it stands. Smith's speculative views on the etymology of Greenock are not informed by professional expertise, if you called him a 'historian' but do not indicate that he is an 'amateur' historian you are materially misleading readers about the value of his views and confusing scholarly etymology with the folk etymology. If you want heart surgery, you want to know the difference between a professional surgeon and a guy who practised on a few dead cows in a barn. While the stakes are not the same, the principle is. I gather from the editing and edit summaries of @Dave souza that he is unhappy diminishing the opinion of R. M. Smith, on the basis that he produced a history of Greenock in the 1920s. I don't really know what to do, I tried different edits to appease him and did not remove Smith's views, even though they could bear no weight as a WP:Reliable source here, but he is still unhappy. 92.1.205.192 (talk) 18:09, 7 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
