Comments[edit]

This guy is a monster! He will make an immediate impact once he is drafted. He is 18 but he already looks like he is almost 40. weird. [1]

It's nice that you think that, but it's not deserving of this or any article. Stating someone looks 42 is something that you say only when watching a game and paying mediocre attention. So I'm deleting that part of the main article. 49giantsharks 22:00, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Someone wrote that he plays for Cleveland. Any reference on that? I thought he was stillan unrestricted free agent, since Portland waived him and no one had signed him yet. Cleveland is looking though. http://www.cbssports.com/nba/blog/eye-on-basketball/21670383/report-cavs-prepared-to-offer-greg-oden-two-year-deal — Preceding unsigned comment added by 7sterling (talkcontribs) 14:42, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Photo[edit]

Would it be possible to get a picture of Oden on here? I think that would greatly help the article. -Andrew 02:41, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

As long as the picture is free of copyright issues. Chensiyuan 02:48, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The current one is strecthed too big... does anyone know how to resize it?Miles Blues 05:32, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It appears to be of doubtful copyright status. In any event, no the pic is always stretched to fix the infobox. Chensiyuan 06:00, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I just saw the same pic on nba.com so i've taken it off. Chensiyuan 06:47, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Height and weight[edit]

Is there a reason why the infobox still has what the article text identifies as his high school height and weight instead of his official NBA predraft measurements? Every time it's changed, somebody always comes along and reverts it. Wouldn't the newer info be more relevant to the article than some numbers which are at least a year old, or are we just waiting until he's actually drafted before making the change? --Billdorr 01:10, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think the NBA's measurements are likely the closest to reality; the ones from high school and college are often inflated. I have to wonder if Oden was ever 280 lbs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.21.100.212 (talk) 23:11, 11 June 2007

I swear, it's a bot or something that keeps changing it back. That, or somebody just doesn't read the edit summaries before they revert. --Billdorr 20:33, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

External links[edit]

Which links are the ones being objected to?

weight[edit]

I would like to say that NBA.com has his weight at 250, not 257. I corrected the right weight.

I would like to say NBA pre draft combine has his weight at 257, and given that they actualy weighed him, not NBA.com, I think this is the more accurate measurement.

World's Sexiest Porn Star[edit]

Umm, yeah...someone tell me that's not serious right?

Pingsteal 05:22, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What are you referring to. Chensiyuan 06:34, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

who did that[edit]

who changed his weight back to 257? NBA.com has it as 250, the weight in here is wrong!

No its not! he was weighed at the pre-draft combine and his weight was 257lbs not 250lbs nba.com DO NOT weigh the players.

This is getting annoying.[edit]

Who keeps changing his weight back to 257 and why? That is WRONG! Why does it keep being reset!

Possibly the same person who kept reverting it to 280 back when the 257 number was released at the pre-draft camp. FYI, 257 is the weight given at Blazers.com, so it's not totally incorrect. I suspect it's a bot or some other sort of automation mistaking the change as vandalism. BTW, please sign your posts. --Billdorr 21:46, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Round 43 of the weight saga. I have changed it to 250 per the NBA profile. As this is a WP:BLP, we should keep it at a weight that is cited by a WP:RS, such as the NBA's page. So, please leave it at 250, or provide a citation for the other weights. Aboutmovies (talk) 08:03, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pre-Draft section[edit]

What purpose does the pre-draft section serve? "Rumors are the Blazers are going to take him" "Wait, they denied it!" "No, they really are!" Once he's actually been drafted, doesn't all that speculation become a moo point (you know, like a cow's opinion)? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.109.103.194 (talk) 20:54, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Obama[edit]

Is the fact that he endorsed Barack Obama really relevant? The guy is a professional athlete, and not even a politically active one. I think it is something that should be removed, but am open to other interpretations.

While I don't think it's bad to leave it on there, it may need to be spruced up some. If you look at the pages for the other athletes who have endorsed Obama it's only mentioned when a source is cited for when they decided to endorse it.
I know He mentioned it on a Blazer's broadcast, wrote a blog post about it, and talked about it on Jim Rome is Burning - maybe we should site a source for one of those records of it? Pcrackenhead (talk) 22:03, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Genetic disorder?[edit]

Does Oden have some kind of genetic disorder? Hes 20 but literally looks 40 (or older). If he has some kind of disorder its relevant to the article, whether you like it or not. --Ragemanchoo (talk) 06:14, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it would be relevant, but "Does Oden have some kind of genetic disorder? Hes 20 but literally looks 40." does not discuss improving the article. It asks a question and makes a WP:OR statement, nothing about it being researched and added to the article. It looked like the thousands of message board type posts that are added everyday to Wikipedia and do not belong per WP:TALK page guidelines. Aboutmovies (talk) 08:38, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And yet, you don't answer the question --Ragemanchoo (talk) 07:07, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if he has one or not, but I doubt it as it would most likely have come up in the media when he was drafted and then missed the entire year. Aboutmovies (talk) 07:12, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As far as wikipedia is concerned, if it doesn't have a WP:RS it doesn't go in the article. Toddst1 (talk) 15:53, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-Protection[edit]

Could someone please semi-protect this page, it is always being vandalized.Henryodell (talk) 00:01, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for bringing this up, and for your efforts at vandal fighting. I see that there is a lot of vandalism in the history. However, at the moment I'm going to decline to semi-protect, as Oden will be on the Rookie All Star Team this weekend. This will probably bring a lot of new traffic, and I believe if reflects poorly on Wikipedia when new visitors are unable to edit. I will try to watch the page over the weekend though, and fight off some of the inevitable vandalism that will come along with the new visitors myself. -Pete (talk) 00:12, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

relevance[edit]

I have removed the following sentence from the introductory paragraph:

He was immediately injured in the first quarter and missed 2 weeks worth of playing time.

While factually true, such a sentence should not be inserted in the overview section of the article. Oden's injury on opening night is of far less importance than his microfracture surgery and the date of his NBA debut.Experience maker (talk) 14:37, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Early years[edit]

I have re-written "Early years" in chronological order. Sidenote: The person in question should never be mentioned by first name only; in this case, use "Oden" or "Greg Oden", but not just "Greg".Experience maker (talk) 16:48, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The nude photo scandal[edit]

Story just broke today. Probably should be mentioned in the article. --24.20.129.18 (talk) 04:03, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Indeed. There was a problem in that the people who were adding the information didn't know to source it, and the people who were removing it didn't care to look for sources. Hopefully my latest edit satisfied BLP, although I must admit it does seem rather incomplete, and not wholly encyclopedic in tone. Oh well, that's what wikis are for. --63.64.165.55 (talk) 05:57, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is the right high school listed?[edit]

The entry says Greg Oden attended Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis. I believe he actually attended Bedford Lawrence North High School in Bedford, Indiana. They are different schools despite the names. One is on the northeast side of suburban Indy and the other perhaps 50 miles to the south-southwest of Indianapolis--about halfway between Indy and Louisville.

24.110.198.171 (talk) 14:42, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, he attended school in Indianapolis at Lawrence North. As someone from the Indy area, I definitely recall hearing of him coming from the area, and various online sources credit him to this school. Dlsimon (talk) 01:35, 18 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No mention of comparison to Sam Bowie?[edit]

Come on this guy is the second coming of Sam Bowie. Drafted ahead of a NBA scoring champion (hmm bet Portland would like to have Durant right about now). Hurt almost constantly. And the same mistake by the same franchise the Jailblazers.

You mentioned this 2 years ago, and I thought it was a bit premature. But now is 2012, this guy is almost getting to a "BUST" status considering the success people drafted behind him have had.99.199.85.237 (talk) 04:06, 21 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request on 3 August 2013[edit]

I would like to edit the page Greg Oden

Thanks! Matthewkimsey14 (talk) 02:21, 3 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You will be able to edit it when your account becomes autoconfirmed. This usually happens when your account is at least four days old with at least 10 edits. RudolfRed (talk) 03:49, 3 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Heat[edit]

I'm surprised this page has been reverted to remove the Heat agreement several times. Perhaps it's being driven by the fact tha tOden hasn't technically signed the contract? Regardless, reliable sources from, uhh, let's say "everything" are reporting it's a done deal and are unequivocal in stating he will play for the Heat next year. I used the CBS source, which seems sufficient. Interwebs (talk) 12:35, 3 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The deal is not official. He has agreed to terms, that doesn't mean he has signed. When it is listed here, then it is official. Once the Miami Heat actually announce it, we can update his article. DaHuzyBru (talk) 13:28, 3 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request on 6 August 2013[edit]

Please change the status of Greg Oden as a "free agent" to a player of the Miami Heat throughout the page. On August 2nd, 2013, Greg Oden officially agreed to sign the Miami Heat. Source: http://www.nba.com/2013/news/08/02/oden-to-sign-with-heat.ap/ StrangeWish (talk) 20:37, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Note that your link says, "The contract is expected to be formally signed early next week." The Heat have not announced anything yet, as far as I can tell. Zagalejo^^^ 02:47, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Current contract[edit]

It's actually a one-year contract. Source: http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/229455/Oden-Heat-Decided-Upon-One-Year-Deal-Without-Player-Option — Preceding unsigned comment added by Miq111 (talkcontribs) 23:41, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
