Article title[edit]

Recently this article was renamed from "Gun laws in Georgia" to "Gun laws in Georgia (U.S. state)". I'm going to rename it back the way it was. There is not a Wikipedia article about gun laws in the European country of Georgia, therefore it is not necessary to disambiguate the title of this article, or to make it more precise, so the original article title is preferable. With that said, if there is a consensus among editors, after sufficient time for discussion (a few weeks, perhaps), for changing the name of this article, then we can proceed. The reason I changed it was two fold:
  • One, other articles about Georgia such as Wikipedia:WikiProject_Georgia_(U.S._state) make the clarification in this way. Someone might add the gun laws in the country someday Georgia.
  • Two, I wish to add this template or something like it to the gun law pages. The state map template works more universally if Georgia is referred to as "Georgia_(U.S._state)".
I would like to change it unless there is a strong objection to this logic.

I really think it's a lot better to leave the article title the way it is, until someone actually creates a "Gun laws in Georgia (country)" article, which might never happen. There's a Wikipedia:WikiProject Georgia (U.S. state) because there's also a Wikipedia: WikiProject Georgia (country). (Those actually aren't articles, but the same concept applies.) Again, if a number of other editors post here and say that the article should be renamed, I'd go along with the consensus. But, you said that you want "to add this Template:Gun_laws_by_US_state or something like it to the gun law pages". You mean a navbox for the gun law by state articles? They already have one, it's {{Gun laws in the United States by state}}. I was thinking a sidebar-style navbox. I fixed the above link to the template. I see the current one but I though a graphic one would be better. It would make it easier to check laws in surrounding states.

I see, you've created {{Gun laws by US state}}, a map style navbox. It looks nice, and I like the map with the clickable states. But, in my opinion, it's a bit too large and flashy to add to all the state gun law articles. I really like the small, compact navbox at the bottom of each of the articles. I think the big map navbox, in the upper right of each article, would take up too much space and be distracting to the reader. But, what about this idea? The "List of U.S. states by first letter" part could be removed from the template, and then the map navbox could be added near the bottom of the main Gun laws in the United States by state article -- in a "See also" section, perhaps? Yeah, I'm not sure what to think so far. Of course other editors might have some opinions about this too. Anyway, let me know if any of this makes sense. Upon further review, here's my crazy new idea. What about using a modified version of the "Gun laws by US state" template -- without the alphabetic list of states, and without the caption saying that the map is a map -- at the top of the "Gun laws in the United States by state" article -- but leaving it off the 51 individual state gun law articles? I've created a facsimile of what this would look like. First I created {{US state linked map/sandbox}}, without the caption, and then I created {{Gun laws by US state/sandbox}}, without the list of states and without a title. Then I put the modified map at the top of the Gun laws in the United States by state article, in my own sandbox. Check it out, you might like it. I think it's pretty good this way, but, again, I would still vote for leaving it off the individual state articles. Let me know what you think! — Mudwater (Talk) 02:28, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation/link to the country Georgia?[edit]

I am not sure that we have a dedicated page for firearm laws in the country of Georgia. I have added a small header in the article to clarify that this is about the U.S. state of Georgia, and a link to Overview of gun laws by nation#Georgia.   • Oppose as unnecessary per WP:CONCISE, WP:OVERPRECISION and WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. There is no other article titled "Gun laws in Georgia" and the redirect Gun laws in Georgia (country) got a total of 8 hits in all of last year![1] There's no logic behind the assumption that because Georgia is disambiguated, every term including the word Georgia must also be automatically disambiguated. There are hundreds of article titles on WP that include the word Georgia without disambiguation, either because they are the only topic, the primary topic, or context is clear. No doubt there a few readers who land on this article by mistake who want the country, but in this WP:ONEOTHER situation, all they need do is click on the hatnote, same as if they had landed on a 2-entry dab page. In the meantime the large majority who are at the article they want and expect are not inconvenienced by having to unnecessarily click through a dab page.   • Support and move Gun laws in Georgia (disambiguation) here, per the Washington discussion. There is already a consensus that "Georgia" is ambiguous and both Georgias have gun laws so this should follow. We shouldn't have a discussion for every descriptive title, if users want the US state to be primary they need to get the main article moved to the base name otherwise all articles with descriptive titles should follow it unless unambiguous.   • Support. Must okay this page move, because it is in-line with the decision in the Gun laws in Washington (state) article referenced above. CONCISE applies to the base article title, not any needed form of dabbing. So this title does not lose concision just because it is dabbed. PRECISION has a similar story. And PTOPIC? Editor Crouch, Swale puts it quite well with "There is already a consensus that 'Georgia' is ambiguous and both Georgias have gun laws so this should follow." Support per previous RM. Seriously, can we stop with needing to do this for every single page like this? Georgia and Washington do not have primary topics.
