The beginning of this song, the opening riffs, have been recently compared to the song The Matador by The Letters Organize from their album Dead Rhythm Machine. Interesting. I came to this article because I thought some of the riffs towards the end of the song sounded like "All of the day and all of the night" by the Kinks. I wanted to read this article to see if there'd been any controversy about that. Surprising to see that other people have identified its similarity to other songs!

Censorship of the song[edit]

I don't see any news reports of this, and because of that it cannot be included in the article, however, I shall mention this here because I think it is of note, and for use in the future, in case the information regarding the censorship does become widely available(ie, news reports). Anyone can see this for themselves, the video posted by the partner program on youtube for this song is no longer available in the USA. Due to the nature of the video, it is obvious this is censorship, and I believe would conflict with the freedom of the press rights. Scripture[edit]

I looked up the song here hoping that it would list where in the Bible the part "Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me" came from. No such luck, so I looked it up myself. It is from Psalms 23:4, most likely from the King James Version or one incredibly similar. Here is a link to the verse. Song meaning[edit]

I still really can't buy the song meaning, now that I've seen the video. Dollar bills, F-117 like birds, pigs, elephants, Soldiers, coffins, bombs, etc. These are all very loaded images in the American socio-political culture. Yet this song is about a school shooter? Yes, there is a quote by the band, but how many times have Jack and Meg White of the White Stripes claimed to be any number of things before their Divorce paperwork was published? The band, after all, did pick the video. Of course. But maybe it's not supposed to make sense, just like the F-117's, which were retired from military service in APR 2008. Just my $.02. Is there anybody with evidence to substantiate the view that the song is actually about a Soldier, such as band quotes, interviews, etc? We have seen quotes supposedly from members of the band saying it's about a school shooting, and the line about the teacher supports this. My issue, however, is the album art, which is an altered 75th Ranger Regiment coat of arms. The scroll on the album art also echoes the shape of the Ranger tab and Army colors (Black and Gold). The article said that the school shooter is actually the teacher. I assume that this is from the line "You can cry teacher come help me." I think that instead of this meaning that the shooter is the teacher, it means that the shooter is a student and the victims want the teacher to help them. Uh...what are you talking about? That doesn't make ANY sense. Why would they write a song about a teacher shooting up the school when that hasn't even been happening in our culture? That lyric refers to the kids crying for the teachers help, but it's useless because the teacher is just as helpless as they are. I'm not sure how to do it, but it should be changed back. I never even knew the song was about a school shooter. Judging by the lyrics, the video, and the coat of arms (pictured in the article), I assumed it was a song about a patriotic soldier fighting in a war.
