Many problems with this article. Seems to be based mostly on a biased biography written for young readers. Some things that possibly should be removed: Horses feet are not often ruined by overracing, poor maintenance, poor conformation, or severe trauma maybe. Nerving a horse does not entail removing a nerve from a horses foot, a nerve is severed above the foot in order to reduce pain generated from a certain area of the foot, this is a common procedure done on horses displaying symptoms of Navicular Bursa Syndrome, and is also indicative of poor hoof conformation. Saying the horse "fell ill" and his "food was cut back" is a little vague and should maybe be further researched, possibly the horse sufferd from gastric distress aka colic and in an attempt to resolve the distress he was removed from feed? A horse can not "stamp" a foot hard enough to fracture a coffin bone. The horse's hoof is designed to absorb thousands of pounds per square inch as is seen every time a horse takes a running stride. This statement is just not possible and should be changed to reflect the true nature of the fracture or removed, furthermore a horse with a fractured coffin bone is basically too lame to walk, so not noticing is also improbable, unable to determine the cause of lameness is more likely. I'm going to have to do some more looking to fill in some of these blanks.
