Split[edit]

I started to look through the main article and got lost in the History section! Not that it isn't an impressive effort in pulling all that information together, but the article is pretty unwieldy. As such, I thought I'd be bold and try to split off the History section into its own article.

There are a few things that I know are tricky, and will need someone with more knowledge to look at:

  • I don't know which of the References and External Links relate to only the History section, so I have left all of them in the main article, and pulled almost all of them across into the subarticle as well.
  • The latter subsections of History, namely Base Railroad, Previous Names, Major Commands to which assigned, Major units assigned, and Eglin Auxiliary fields: it wasn't clear which side of the split these should be, since although all of them contain some historical elements, they don't fit into the chronological style of the rest of the History section, and some parts of them relate to the present day status of the base.
  • Although I've added the Main article: link, I haven't attempted a summary of the split text, so it just goes straight into the Railroad subsection. Ideally this would have a couple of paragraphs summarising the thousands of words I split off!
  • I did a short contextual intro to the new article, mostly from the existing intro on the main article, but I'm sure this could be better.

I hope I haven't upset anyone by doing this, but I think it makes it easier for readers to navigate in this format. Gsyhiap (talk) 20:23, 11 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Too long, too much minorly related material[edit]

The majority of the article is about testing and evaluation of various Air Force planes, missiles, and other systems. The article (currently 30th largest, out of more than 4 million articles) could be considerably shortened if the details of each type of test/evaluation were in the relevant article for that plane, missile, or whatever, with just a brief mention here, as in

"During the 1960s, testing included:

  • The first test launch of a rocket-borne transmitter, in January 1960.[1]
  • An intensive flight test program of the first production Republic F-105D Thunderchief, F-105D-1-RE, 58-1146, c/n D-1, which began at Eglin during the last week of January 1960. [2]"
  • AGAM-77 Hound Dog missile, was carried aloft for the first time on 29 January 1960,[3] aboard a B-52G-75-BW Stratofortress, 57-6472, c/n 464177, of 4135th Strategic Wing, commanded by Capt. Jay L. McDonald.[4] All previous launches having been made by contractor crews flying B-52s.

And so on: just enough detail to (a) give readers a good sense of the development of Air Force technology as seen at Eglin, and (b) links to articles where readers can learn more about the development and use of any plane, missile, etc., of particular interest.

There might be separate, major sections for (a) Organizational changes and operational missions; (b) Testing and evaluation [see above]; (c) Buildings and grounds (e.g., new control tower, new museum), and (d) other.

Such a change would considerably shorten the article, and allow the reader to select only those details of particular interest. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 15:22, 22 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I see no reason why this article needs to include pure trivia not needed nor useful for readers, and to iterate material in bluelinked articles. Collect (talk) 14:53, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article is bloated with arrival/departure trivia more suited to a base newsletter archive; vanity mentions of units; and an appalling amount of in-depth cruft about systems and weapons testing, in many cases sourced to regurgitated press releases and possibly inserted by somebody at the weapons manufacturer's PR office.
