Right, we've got the ball rolling now which is good. I havn't yet been able to find sources that verify the use of Maltese in Gibraltar but it definitely is in use within some families. I have basic knowledge of the language as my mother speaks it and I've seen my mother speak to different people in Gib purely in Maltese! Peter Caruana is of Maltese descent. Genoa[edit]

Is there any particular reason why people from Genoa, Italy as well as Maltese immigrated to Gibraltar? - Soprani 06:43, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The main reason was that a civilian workforce was required by the garrison to run Gibraltar. Due to the British connections with Genoa and Malta at that time, many people from those places were recruited to Gibraltar. The Genoese were mainly fishermen and traders of all sorts. The Maltese who moved to Gibraltar were mainly boat workers and other labourers who took up required jobs at the dockyard. They were also owners and drivers of the horse drawn carriages (Maltese: Carozzin), which were first introduced to Gibraltar by the Maltese.

The book The Gibraltarian by H.W. Howes goes into some detail as to the role that these people played in the running of the garrison at that time.Gibmetal 77 ^talk 11:58, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
