heracles.nl: Horace Colclough arrived in Almelo (the town where Heracles play) 15 Aug 1920: 'The former Crystal Palace player and former semi-international [?!] opened a hotel in Vastert....gunshot wound in his knee...his disability hinders him not too hard to be merciless' ! Another Heracles website: 'In 1920 was appointed [as coach] Horace Colclough, thanks mainly to the major financier Doede Doedes [sic] Breuning ten Cate, textile baron himself so. After Colclough would still many English trainers Heracles to be employed. That Horace Colclough, former Crystal Palace player, was also flawed because of a gunshot wound during the First World War.' A reply from Marc Harrington, Crystal Palace communications officer, Sep 2006: 'One of our club historians, Ian King, acquired a Crystal Palace handbook from 1912 a few years ago and in the book it states Colclough's forename as Horace.' Sure enough, Ian King sent xeroxes of pages from two Crystal Palace handbooks (1912-13 & 1913-14), both of which call him Colclough, Horace. 1912-13 handbook: 'This back is new to the Palace, coming from Crewe Alexandra, through whose ranks many good footballers have passed. He plays right or left back. Native of Staffordshire. Age 23, height 5ft 9½in, weight 11st 6 lb. 1913-14 handbook: 'In last years's "Who's Who" it was merely stated that "this back is new to the Palace, coming from Crewe Alexandra, through whose ranks many good footballers have passed." Now it can be said that, at any rate, very few, if any, better backs have been associated with Crewe Alexandra, and he rendered yeoman service. His strong kicking and accurately-timed rushes serve him well. Native of Staffordshire. Height 5ft 9½in, weight 11st 7 lb.' I know about the Henry Colcloughs in various Censuses, but none of them has been proved to be the England footballer. And the Palace handbooks can't have been wrong.
