Removed the quotation marks around hostile and friendly in The Odyssey to Fort Kiowa. IFAIK if someone wants to kill you, they're hostile, regardless of their possible justification for being so; likewise, it's safe to assume that a group that bandages your wounds is friendly. The words are merely modifiers to differentiate the two groups. The best solution would be to find out which tribes were in the area and to whom the text might be referring. 68.2.21.248 (talk) 17:43, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Glass's 200 mile Crawling Odyssey

How is this not more widely known? Up until this point, I thought the hiker who sawed off his own arm with a pocket knife was the hardest man ever to live. This guy clearly takes the cake. A six-week, 200 mile journey through the South Dakota wilderness with no weapons, food or tools, with festering maggoty wounds and a shattered femur...did I mention he did the whole thing WHILE CRAWLING ON HIS FACE?! I liked the part about how he somehow "drove off" two full grown timber-wolves from a rotting carcass so he could have a bite...I can't really construct a sentence that does justice to that. The slightest scent of fear and they would have surely finished him off. Ever noticed how when predators battle for dominance, oftentimes there's no way to tell the winner until one animal breaks and runs? It's all scent, vocalizations, eye-contact and body display. They can tell who is the dominant one without even having to fight. Despite having all appearances as a dying prey animal (or, at best, a worthless maimed predator to be ignored completely), something in his scent, eyes and body language told those wolves "This wolf is harder and meaner than me, and if I fight him I will lose" and presumably they simply respected that on an animalistic level.
