Compression ignition[edit]

A section or reference is needed here. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by David R. Ingham (talkcontribs) 00:28, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How does 'pre-ignition' occure after the spark? Only detonation can occure then. Even later on in the article under 'Dyno tuning' It says a knock sensor is used to detect knock that occures when timing is too advanced. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine_knocking#Pre-ignition States pre-ignition occures before the spark plug fires. 205.250.78.251 (talk) 20:31, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Retarded / Delayed[edit]

This is starting to become a edit war.

For a pragmatic check: Googling 'retarded timing' produces 3,580,000 results of which the first page worth are all to do with engines. 'delayed timing' produces 25,700,000 results of which the first page has none to do with engines. Why do you think this has anything to do with disability? The technical term is 'retarded timing' so that is what the article should say. Mtpaley (talk) 22:35, 6 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I guess you may be right, but still I don't like the use of the word 'retarded' in any context. Why not just use my first edit which the bot blocked, "Delayed timing (in profession, sometimes referred to as retarded timing) is defined as;..." I have mentally challenged family members and whenever I hear someone say something like 'dude you are such a retard' to another, it just upsets me. People use the word 'retarded' 95% of the time to put another person down and have essentially changed the meaning of the word. I really meant this edit in a good way. I know it has nothing to do with disability in this context, but in today's modern society most people just use it as a bad word, so I just don't want to see it used at all now. In my edit I still mention that it is sometimes called retarded timing. I think you are being a bit insensitive. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.28.251.208 (talk) 22:54, 6 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How would you feel if your brother had a mental disability? I hear people say 'retard' all the time with zero discretion for it's correct use. If people do not use it correctly the vast majority of the time, then it takes on a different meaning. Please reconsider reverting my edits — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.28.251.208 (talk) 23:07, 6 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I can see why the word 'retarded' has strong emotional issues for you but is not intrinsically a discriminatory word. It is a perfectly valid and well defined word that happens to have acquired a (probably temporary) secondary meaning as a insult. When it comes to discussing engine timing nobody would ever regard 'retarded' as anything other than a technical term and nobody reading this article should regard it as anything other than a technical term to do with engines. Your original edit said that the term is 'delayed ... sometimes referred to as retarded' but from what I can see and read it is always referred to as retarded. Wikipedia is a encyclopedia so should just report the facts without any personal issues. Mtpaley (talk) 23:18, 6 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't like it but you are right. Thanks for explaining this to me. In my own writings I will never use the word, but yes since wikipedia is group writing I suppose the word must be used. Sorry to take your time, you are a good editor. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.28.251.208 (talk) 23:31, 6 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Early history[edit]

When was automatic timing introduced. I can remember cars from the twenties and thirties that had two levers on the steering column. One was a throttle to allow fast idle while the engine was cold, the other was for timing advance/retard which needed to be operated as the revs were increased. Does anyone know somone with a veteran/vintage car so they can get a photo for the article? 2.31.1.107 (talk) 10:45, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
