In 2008, the band got its start in Provo, Utah where lead singer Dan Reynolds met guitarist Wayne "Wing" Sermon. Reynolds was attending Brigham Young University [1] and Sermon had recently returned to his hometown of American Fork, Utah from the Berklee School of Music. Soon after the partnership of Reynolds and Sermon, Sermon recruited another Berklee music student, Ben McKee, to join the band.[2] The band went through various lineups, including the addition of fellow BYU students Andrew Tolman and Brittany Tolman.[3] With Reynolds singing lead, Imagine Dragons won BYU’s "Battle of the Bands" and other local competitions [4]. The members lived together in Las Vegas, the hometown of Dan Reynolds, where the band recorded and released their first three EPs.[5]
