Foaling date[edit]

I've undone the change which shows Indian Queen as foaled on 1 January 1985. Although the Racing Post ref shows that date, I doubt she was actually foaled then - that date pre-dates the start of the Racing Post, and I have a feeling that they show the "theoretical" foaling date of 1 Jan for all births previous to the start of their database. A quick random search on Shergar, Nijinsky and Desert Orchid all show them with 1 Jan foaling dates, whereas more recent horses (Frankel, Sea the Stars, Kauto Star) have more credible-looking foaling dates. I know we shouldn't disagree with referenced data but in this case, and any other horses apparently foaled on 1 January, it might be better to leave the date out altogether unless there a further reference to agree with the RP. --Bcp67 (talk) 08:38, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It is certain that you are much more experienced with these refs. So it is OK for me to leave the date out. Egeymi (talk) 08:41, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
RP and equineline both use 1 January xxxx to show that they don't have the exact foaling date. It is just possible for a TB to be born on 1 January, but it would be very unusual and suggest a premature foal. If a racehorse was to be born on 31 December, it would be almost pointless to race him for the first three years of his life as he would have to compete at level weights with older horses. Studs usually arrange matings so that foals are born between late January and early May. Tigerboy1966  08:52, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Equineline give foaling date for IQ as 25 Feb.  Tigerboy1966  08:55, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for tracking that down - not come across equineline before. --Bcp67 (talk) 21:14, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
