Old stuff

Created on April 24, 2005. There was no main heading for the Art of India/Indian art (although there seems a strange listing on Arts & Entertainment of India???). The idea of putting in links for parents' use in opening up the wiki for greater use is also tried out - suggesting at some point another subdivision. This entry may have occasional additions, but with hope it shall be expanded by those who know more on this massive topic. As an aside the modern and post-modern Indian art is worth a followup, as indeed the influences of Indian art on other countries.

Our interest is of course related to Korean monks studying in India, and bringing back statues, books, and extensive knowledge to Korea from as early as the 12th century, thus disproving the fiction of Korea's isolation from the rest of the world. POofYS Dated 07:45, 24 April 2005.

ADDITIONS

Since Indian Art is a vast subject, it would be great if more people can help and contribute in this section. I have just started adding contents, but it would be great if someone can edit and contribute more. Also in an integrated approach of how traditional Indian art takes its source from mythology and philosophy, as this would give a good direction in understanding Modern and Post Modern Indian art.

Expansion ideas

[1] and [2] are two translators we can use. Don't use the whole page translation, because it sucks. Rather, use chunks of content.--Scheibenzahl 18:36, 20 March 2007 (UTC) and

Which article?

"This article includes a history of Indian art, done by people within India, such as M_F_Husain or by the Indian people, or by Indian expats abroad."

It wasn't clear to what article this referred, so I cut it. -->>sparkit|TALK<< 23:05, July 14, 2005 (UTC)

Organization

It would probably be best to have this article be about visual art in India, and move the sections on dance and music to other pages. Lithoderm (talk) 15:34, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

The terms "Indian"

Aren't Pakistani art and Indian art the same thing? Put simply Pakistanis and Bangladeshis are of Indian origin, they are a part of the indian people. I think Pakistani art should redirect here. It wouldn't be a very good thing since Pakistan has a history with india. LOTRrules Talk Contribs 00:07, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

Merge proposal

Oppose This article should be only about visual art, as is the case with other "Fooian art" national articles. Sections on music etc should be moved to a more appropriate home, which might well be "Arts and entertainment in India". Johnbod (talk) 14:10, 17 February 2010 (UTC)

Reorganization

I read through the ideas presented on this talk page. Although they seem 5+ years old on average, I gathered that there were multiple ways to present Indian Art, depending on what the editor chose as his/her axis, e.g. time-based, religion-based or culture-based. Using this idea, and referring to French art and Japanese art as guidelines, I have reorganized this page into three discussions: Temporal, Material and Contextual. I retained almost all of the original text. I also added more images, put in empty section placeholders and played with the layout for readability.

I hope you are going to add more content. Reorganizing a 2/3 empty article isn't a great help! Johnbod (talk) 01:53, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
@Johnbod: Yes, I'm here to help and plan to do so incrementally (hence the placeholders). Whether it is great, only time (and my peers here at WikiVerse) will tell. Thanks for keeping an eye on this, and for your vast contributions to visual arts articles. ~ scribble · ink chat\contrib 08:31, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

New page for History of Indian art?

The section "Temporal History of Indian art" deserves it's own article with more detailed focus on the history. Several points, including Indo-Greek art, foreign influences on Indian art, Tanjore painting, local handicrafts, etc. are not even mentioned properly in the section. I didn't find any article on History of Indian art, so can anyone please clarify this for me?

should not include hellenistic or persian influenced line in light of indus civilization art discoveries

the persian and hellenistic influences are now a dead theory in light of art discoveries made in indus civilization and motifs discovered in indus civilization are same which are being declared as persian motifs. The hellenistic art itself is a dead theory in light of recent discovery of Pylos combat agate which pushes the realistic Hellenistic art to the minoan period before the greeks.

this is the indus civilization statue

red statue harappa

on the right is lohanipur torso

Lohanipur torso with the matching details of harappa statue

this is the Pylos combat agate of the minoan period

There is mighty heaven and hell difference between both the philosophical and the artistic visualization of hellenistic or say minoan human torso, and the indian/ harappan one. The greeks depict human torso as idealistic athlete while the indians depict torso in its normal human natural shape even though both are realistic depictions of human body. So hellenistic representation doesnt automatically mean realism this theory and notion should be considered out dated. Harappans have made pretty realistic depictions of animals and humans much before the minoans or the greeks.

The agate's researchers state that this discovery necessitates a reevaluation of the time-line on which Greek art developed.[14] While dated as belonging to the Aegean Bronze Age, Davis notes that it bears more resemblance to Classical period art, which developed a millennium later, due to the breadth of anatomical knowledge embodied in the stone's engravings.

What on earth has the Pylos combat agate, over 1,000 years older, got to do with it? No one is saying that style influenced India. Johnbod (talk) 21:01, 7 December 2018 (UTC)
friend, i have already explained that, can you please read again what i have already stated. minoan agate discovered one year ago depicts a Hellenistic art form which was thought to emerge slowly from 900 BC to 400-300 BC with the evolutionary process of greek art, the art historians sited the egyptian looking statue from early greek period as the form adopted by greeks who turned it into Hellenistic form by exhibiting muscles etc, this is exactly commented by jhon marshall when he saw the harappan jasper statue, that the statue with such realism preceded the hellenistic realism by more than a thousand years and failed to believe that it was harappan and declared it gupta period. The minoan agate debunks the entire construction of fake art theory of hellenistic art, and proves that greeks adopted this since minoan period nothing else, greeks have been taking fake pride of inventing some art they clearly didn't. There is also a time gap of a thousand years between hellenistic art and the minoan agate which shows that the art was never lost. my point is, historic manipulation on indian art should end now, realism has nothing to do wit hellenistic or foreign influence, its clearly a product of indian civilization. 115.135.130.182 (talk) 00:17, 8 December 2018 (UTC)

Canon of body proportions in classical Indian art: depictions of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva

I am working to update the article currently called Aesthetic canon. The section on Classical Indian Art is very much a stub at present but I am reading "Talamana Or Iconometry," Memoirs Of The Archaeological Survey Of India No. 3 by Gopinatha Rao. For that reason, I have extracted his drawing of the canon of body proportion from page 90. My knowledge of Indian Art could be written on the back of a Covid virus so if any of the regulars on here have time to review the upload at Commons, it might be wise. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 15:48, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

Pakistani art, etc.

If Pakistani art is going to redirect to this page, it should be titled Art of the Indian Subcontinent.
