What is the correct name of the UK's Olympic team?[edit]

Is the UK's Olympic team "Great Britain" or "Great Britain and Northern Ireland"?

Need for clarity re. Ireland/ROI[edit]

Can we find some way of clarifying that the "Ireland" in question is the ROI Olympic team and not an all-Ireland team? I've added "representing Repiblic of Ireland" in brackets, but Vintagekits is edit-warring. Mooretwin (talk) 14:51, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Loud sigh* - Northern Ireland is not mentioned in the article, nor does it compete on its own in the Olympics, so their is no confusion. Ireland is an all-Ireland team in many sorts in the Olympics - for example Boxing! check and mate I believe.--Vintagekits (talk) 14:54, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Whether or not NI is mentioned or competes on its own is irrelevant. The use of the name "Ireland" leaves open the possibility of confusion that the team may represent the whole island. Mooretwin (talk) 14:59, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
In fact, the absence of any mention of NI, and the fact that NI does not compete individually, makes the likelihood of confusion even greater. And your own misconception backs this up (i.e. your claim that it is an all-Ireland team in many sports - some competitors may come from NI, but they represent ROI. Except that "Ireland" is an all-Ireland team. The Olympic Council of Ireland is chartered by the International Olympic Committee as "the Olympic Team for the island of Ireland".[1] The OCI uses the symbols of the Republic, but often includes competitors from Northern Ireland (especially, as Vintagekits notes, in boxing) as those athletes may choose for which team they compete. -- Jonel (Speak to me) 18:28, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's not. The OCI makes that claim - probably because, de facto, in many sports the teams are picked on an all-Ireland basis - but Olympic teams represent only sovereign states, as per the Olympic Charter. Also, the GB team is in fact GB&NI, therefore the "Ireland" team cannot be all-Ireland. Mooretwin (talk) 18:36, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
