Ethnic background[edit]

J looks like he is Italian, anyone know his background?

not jewish - Italian Arleach (talk) 02:25, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

any link or ref re his ethnicity? Could be Italian, maybe, but must admit he looks Jewish. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.129.143.168 (talk) 17:31, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

not a valid source, really, but here's something from ancestry.com that strangely has a Joeseph *A* Mascis replying to the thread -- http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.mascis/1.2.2/mb.ashx . Also, the following is totally un-verifiable but comes from the freakscene.net message boards

"The last name of Masci or Mascis or Masciovecchio or Mascio or Masciarelli or Mascitelli are Latin based names and a not uncommon beginning of a last name, esp. when descending from Italy or Sardinia or you know around there.

The origin or etymology of that prefix in a sur name actually comes from the Old latin word for Mastro (master, a very good craftsman) if you go to Italy.........and of course other places but especially Italy and the surrounding areas you will find this prefix. Don't just take my word for it..........investigate it for yourself........have some fun. I believe the "s" on the ending is Romany (otherwise known as the original Black Irish ;)).........that's just a womans intuition combined with some background.

I think the correct spelling of Romany is Romani.........the traveling descendants of Roma."

better picture[edit]

please, i beg you.

That's jes what he looks like :) Maybe a pre-blond photo mid-article? Yes or no? Oystermind 04:03, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Expansion[edit]

When a musician has done nearly all his significant work as part of a particular band, it's likely that that work will mostly be discussed in the band's article. I'm not sure the expansion tag is really justified here--I'm not sure that it's even fair to describe this as a "stub". If I'm wrong, feel free to expand this article with non-Dinosaur Jr.-related J Mascis info. Nareek 17:17, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is a moronic comment. Ive just finished reading an article on Alexa Chung that's about twice as long! Clearly Mascis is vastly more important than she is. He was crucial in the development of grunge, is one of the finest electric guitarists in indie music in the last 20 years and has had very great influence on its development: even if hes less famous than he should be, his influence on others is so great that that we really must expand this very thin article as soon as possible. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.104.223.190 (talk) 23:19, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

uma thurman[edit]

i wonder if there exist reliable ressources concerning a love affair between uma thurman and j mascis... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 87.167.5.31 (talk) 19:30, 22 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

That was a joke on "1991: The Year Punk Broke." Kim (of Sonic Youth) was interviewing J and asked what Amherst was like since Uma left. J then went on to talk about the apathetic nature of the townsfolk since her departure, but said he was coping with it or something to that affect. He also hates the thought of skydiving despite what "Free So Free" said, that was made up by the biographer.

Berlin?[edit]

The article says his wife is from Berlin. Berlin, Germany, or Berlin, Massachusetts? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 129.55.200.20 (talk) 14:53, 27 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Definitely Berlin, Germany as Phillipp, her brother, is a German film director.

depression?[edit]

I wonder, if Mascis is that fat because he is taking antidepressive medication because of a serious clinical depressive disorder... any information about it? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 87.167.61.43 (talk) 22:17, 5 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

I have heard that J. has some form of asperengers (sp?).--Readytodie 20:34, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah mean aspergers but J's weight gain is probably down to nothing more than the aging process.

Signature Guitars[edit]

The paragraph as it stands is misleading and describes two separate guitars, but doesn't differentiate between the two:

"July 2007 saw the release of a signature guitar by Fender, the J Mascis Signature Jazzmaster. The instrument comes in a Purple Sparkle finish and, while otherwise visually similar to a standard Jazzmaster, features a few modifications J requested. The J Mascis Jazzmaster features a basswood body, C-shaped maple neck, rosewood fingerboard with 9.5” radius and 21 jumbo frets, two single-coil Jazzmaster pickups with three-position switching and dual tone circuits, gold anodized aluminum pickguard, aged white plastic parts (knobs, switch tip, pickup covers), Adjusto-Matic™ bridge with vintage-style floating tremolo tailpiece, vintage-style tuners, chrome hardware, Vintage White finish and J Mascis signature on the back of the large ’60s-style headstock."

J Mascis has two signature guitars.

The first half of the paragraph is describing the Purple Jazzmaster, made in Japan with an Alder body. This guitar is no longer distributed by Fender in the US, but is still sold in Japan. You can see this on page 6 of the 2013 Fender Japan Catalogue here: http://www.kandashokai.co.jp/flos/fender_japan/all_pdf/catalog_fender_japan_2013.pdf

The newer signature guitar is the Vintage White Squier Jazzmaster, made in China with a Basswood body. More information on this guitar is available here: http://www.fender.com/guitars/jazzmaster/squier-j-mascis-jazzmaster/

I'm not very experienced with putting things into Wikipedia language. Could someone make the changes to the guitar paragraph? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fredescu (talkcontribs) 00:08, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Solo albums[edit]

@N-HH: When mentioning the six albums I was going by the solo ones that are part of the discography. Now, I fully realise that of of the other ones listed, such as J Mascis + The Fog are essentially solo efforts. However Witch and Deep Wound are not. I'm not really sure what to make of Sweet Apple and Heavy Blanket. This leaves us in a bit of fix IMHO. I can see other editors going back and slotting in the six listed under solo, arguing that it needs to be more specific. Maybe say 'six regular studio albums under his own name'? I'm entirely open to other suggestions. Karst (talk) 16:18, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ha, I was thinking it could be even more complicated, with more variables, than that. Only the latest two are formal solo studio albums full of original material (indeed, FWIW, their pages currently refer to them as the "debut solo studio album" and "second" respectively). Sing for Amma is a bit of an oddity, and includes adapations AFAIK; Martin + Me, the Peel Sessions and CBGBs are live albums of old songs and covers. The Fog was kind of a solo project but probably does count as a band, as do the others, which seem to be full collaborative projects. So depending on the criteria, you could say anywhere between two and eight with justification, hence why I thought a switch to "several" is probably the best idea, especially for the lead, as it's not wrong, and will remain correct even when the next one comes along, without having to be updated. N-HH talk/edits 16:38, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha. Yeah, I had a lot of trouble sourcing any of the solo albums really. I rarely got beyond discogs.com. They appear pretty obscure. I was tempted to create a J Mascis discography page, but I'm not sure there will be enough sources for that to make it a viable option. Your thoughts? Karst (talk) 16:52, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm easy, although I tend to think that unless the discography section overwhelms the main content, it's better left within the main subject page rather than as a standalone list-style page. I'm not sure it does here or ever would (unlike, say, Robert Pollard). As for sources, All Music has a page for J specifically, as well as individual pages for other bands. Then there's this fan page, which might not pass source control, but is likely to be pretty accurate I'd have thought (some fans being quite obsessive about this things). N-HH talk/edits 11:23, 10 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the suggestions. That fansite is quite the repository. Karst (talk) 11:54, 10 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
