Equipment[edit]

Interesting as I find the information on Nachtwey's equipment, isn't it rather time-sensitive? At the very least I would imagine that he has upgraded from a Power Mac G4, and I'm sure his cameras are replaced and upgraded frequently as well. Looks like an ad for Canon to me.

How is it an ad? Musician pages usually mention equipment if the musician is partial to a particular company. People who have endorsed a company usually have those companies on their pages. People who will read this page are here because they are looking at his career, which Canon is a part of. IntrigueBlue is right about it being time-sensitive. It might be nice to list the two cameras he was using when the documentary was filmed and that he has appeared in Canon adverts. The Power Mac G4 thing is just absurd. Maybe if he is really outspoken about being a mac user, Apple should be mentioned. But naming the model number of his computer is like mentioning what he ate for dinner on April 9th, 1997. --Jrader 21:34, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see what relevance his equipment has - other than for camera geeks or sales employees of Canon. He's said himself that the equipment you use doesn't determine the quality of your photographs. I'd like to propose that the section gets removed. It would be better dealt with under an article about Canon cameras mentioning Nachtwey by name.NBeddoe 21:22, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think a section about Nachtwey's technique and/or equipment is useful; however, anything that we put down about equipment should inform an explanation of his technique. His choice of the Canon brand is less useful to the article than pointing out his use of relatively heavy-duty 35mm cameras in general (unless the Canon brand provides some specific benefit to his particular technique, which it doesn't seem to). The passages about his adoption of digital cameras as well as film and his use of a laptop to edit his photos in the field are both useful, since they also inform the reader's understanding of his "go-anywhere" approach. However, in both cases, the brand is relatively unimportant. In fact, if NBeddoe can find a sourced quote for his "equipment ... doesn't determine the quality of your photographs" line, that seems like a useful inclusion as well, and may help to better focus the article's general thrust. Unfortunately I don't have a verifiable source for this quote; I heard him say it to someone at a lecture he did at the Royal Geographic Society a few years ago. I'll try and see if I can get a reference to a transcript.NBeddoe (talk) 11:43, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've added a link to a newspaper review of the lecture but it doesn't mention the quote. After reading the equipment section again, I really feel it should be taken out. It's irrelevant, time specific and does not cite sources for any of it. Unless anyone objects or can come up with a better version, I'll leave it a week or so and take it out. In the movie War Photographer you can see him using several Canon bodies and L lenses. I think the only gear worth mentioning is his use of the 35 mm lens, he uses this lens the most. It might be worth leaving the camera information in, on that basis that his agency is sponsored by Canon, to the effect they have a policy to only use Canon gear when shooting digital. This is explained on their website. When talking about a photographer, I don't think it's drawing too long a bow to mention their camera gear. I'd say computer equipment is superfluous though.

I have removed this paragraph. It fails the SYNTH part of WP:NOR as it analyses an article and references just the article itself, hence being the perfect definition of original research.
