There was some discussion about this in 2012, but it looks as though some key information was unavailable or overlooked at the time.

As was previously discussed, the "Korean name" given in the current version of the article, 제이미정, is very clearly a transcription of her English name. Her Korean Wikipedia entry, however, gives an actual, native-style Korean name, 정지린 (Jeong Jirin/Chŏng Chirin), and provides a reputable source for it (a Korea Times article).

As for the Hanja name, my personal feeling is that it was established in 2012 that 鍾潔咪 cannot be a real name in Hanja (i.e., Chinese characters as used in Korean), since 鍾 is an extremely rare surname in Korea and 咪 isn't used in Korean at all. But I would say it is now incontestable, since the characters 潔咪 absolutely do not correspond to the pronunciation 지린. (If 潔咪 were an actual Korean name, it would be pronounced 결미 Gyeolmi/Kyŏlmi.) The name 鍾潔咪 is almost certainly the creation of Chinese-language media (note that the source cited is Taiwanese) and derived from her English name; in Mandarin 潔咪 is pronounced as Jiémī, obviously corresponding to "Jamie."

I will add that Chung is rarely referred to as 정지린 in Korean-language sources. In fact, the Korean Wikipedia article is titled 제이미 정, and the Korea Times article also refers to her as such except for the single reference to 정지린 at the beginning. However, this is a standard practice for Korean Americans who use English names. Steven Yeun, for example, has the Korean name 연상엽, but is normally referred to in Korean as 스티븐 연, a transcription of his English name.

I do not have an account and even if I were to register one I would not be able to make edits to this semiprotected article. So I would like to propose the following changes to the "Korean name" infobox:

  • Replace

with

정지린<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.koreatimes.com/article/727618|title=아시안 청소년 ‘비저너리 리더’여배우 에이미 정|newspaper=The Korea Times|date=May 5, 2012|access-date=June 14, 2021}}</ref>
  • Delete
|hanja = 鍾潔咪<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.agentm.tw/artist_page?a_id=4ccc5ce5c99d0b56156fb9e7d34ea73f66d6fe9c4f6008283328ad6d5059b71c|title=鍾潔咪|newspaper=agentm.tw|date= |access-date= February 28, 2021}}</ref>

I have no replacement to propose for this; I haven't done an extensive search, but my guess is we won't find Chung's actual name in Hanja, given that Korean media hardly ever even uses her Korean name in Hangul, much less Hanja.

Done in revision 1032203771. If anyone else would like to restore the Hanja transcription, however, I would be fine with that as I am not familiar with Korean names in general. 😊 TGHL ↗ 🍁 02:29, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
