Word Usage?[edit]

He's an american, so isn't he a soccer player? or does he play for a European team —Preceding unsigned comment added by Beefpelican (talkcontribs) Yes, he's an American and yes, he's what you'd call a soccer player. But football is the common usage in the rest of the world, so that's what's used here. HornetMike 20:52, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would normally agree with HornetMike here, but when you're referring to the sports he played in high school, and you say "football," it just gets confusing, which is what just happened in this article. Che84 01:12, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Words should be referred to as they are used in the country they're from s- he played high school soccer, but he plays football for Watford is how it should be stated, I believe. Miles Blues 06:49, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The use of the term "football" can be additionally confusing in the context of saying that DeMerit is "an American football player" since "American football" is in itself a sport. For this reason, I am changing that phrase to "is an American soccer player". --JumboBuc (talk) 15:52, 26 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

National Team Status[edit]

He's been called up to the national team, regardless of his being picked for a match. Using your logic, random IP address, DaMarcus Beasley was no longer a part of the team because he wasn't called up for the friendlies against Mexico and Denmark, which just isn't true. I'm going to revert your edits on these grounds. --Che84 02:23, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

DaMarcus Beasley was not part of the team for the Mexico match, that's exactly right. DeMerit is not part of the team yet. When the ROSTER is announced, if he is on it, then he will be a part of the team. Kasey Keller hasn't been on the National Team since the World Cup, neither has Gregg Berhalter, etc. Simply being invited to camp means that those players are part of the pool which the final team will be chosen from, not that they're all a part of the team. 74.132.172.179 11:43, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It is a bit of a weird situation. Traditionally in football, if you've been called up for a squad before a game, you're in the squad for the game. However, this source does suggest that a certain number of players have been called up for a training camp before hand, and the implication is, although not explicitly stated, is that they're going to select a second squad for the actual game. Odd. Anyway, let's not have an edit war over this, please. Let's just see how it develops. HornetMike 12:04, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
See, but, they are a part of the team. National teams aren't comprised of just the players who have been on the roster for the most recent game. The team is much larger than they are for one match. DeMerit, along with Frankie Simek, are now a part of the national team, regardless of their being selected for a match.
Also, as far as Wikipedia editing goes, even though, for example, Beasley hadn't been called up since the World Cup until this coming training camp, his national team status still said "2001-". He wasn't called up for the squad for the matches against Mexico and Denmark, but he was still a part of the team. If you apply the same logic to DeMerit, he's on the team, but he hasn't yet earned a cap.
In any case, I'll leave it as is. If you wish to change it back, feel free. The whole issue will be resolved within 2 weeks anyways. --Che84 17:50, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
For international purposes, until they have PLAYED in a game, they are not a member of that team. Being called into camp has no bearing on ANY FIFA status. It is for that reason that Freddy Adu was still eligible to play for Ghana for so long and the Guiseppi Rossi could have played for Italy or the USA, becuase they had been called into a few camps, but NEVER played in a game. DeMerit's situation is no different, he has been called into a camp, which in no way implies that he will be a member of a match squad...it simply implies that he now has a better opportunity to be selected for a squad. In the case of Beasley his said 2001-present because he had already established the start date of his national team career (2001) and had not announced a retirement from international play, so it made sense to leave it open. In the case of DeMerit and Simek who have not made their debut...even as substitutes, it does not make sense as it does on the Beasley page. 74.132.172.179 19:18, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
...Your logic makes absolutely no sense. Basically, you're saying that, if they make the team, but don't set foot on the pitch, they aren't part of the team. That's just blatantly false. And also, it makes the exact same sense for Beasley as it does for Simek and DeMerit. If you're going to have Beasley's status on the team as active, as well as players like...Cory Gibbs, for example, then DeMerit and Simek should have the same status, as they are just as active. Che84 19:57, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No Che, if you would actually read my posts you'd see the perfect sense it makes. Beasley and Gibbs have been a part of an actual match roster at some point in their careers. Simek and DeMerit have not. They have been called into a CAMP from which a roster will be chosen. Beasley and Gibbs have been a part of a match roster. If and when DeMerit and Simek are CHOSEN to be on a MATCH ROSTER rather than being in a CAMP, then they will warrant inclusion into the national team status. As of now, they're NOT on the team. There are 24 people at the camp....only 18 will make a final roster...which means that 6 players WILL NOT BE ROSTERED and will therefore NOT be a part of the team. If Beasley were to announce his retirement from the game today, then it would make sense to stop his "National Team Years" at 2001-2007. Since he has not done that, they stay open. Simek and DeMerit, have not officially appeared for the national team on a MATCH roster. Much to your apparent dismay, DeMerit is not a member of the United States National Team at this point. He is a member of the National Team Player pool...which is close, but not the same. 74.132.172.179 02:27, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
They have been a part of a match roster at some point in their careers. Again, I'm going to use your logic here, and using it, no one is on the national team right now. As such, all players should have their time on the national team closed, rather than left open-ended. DeMerit and Simek are just as much a part of the team as Beasley or Gibbs at this point, so they should be referred to the same way in their articles. Playing on a team in the past doesn't mean you're still included in it, which is what you're saying. Overall, I agree with your point, they aren't on the team, but then, no one really is. Che84 05:22, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think the problem's been solved for us anyway. DeMerit is injured, and apparently will probably miss out on the US camp. HornetMike 08:11, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
He won't be fit for the Ecuador match, but he'll probably be ready to play against Guatemala. http://yanks-abroad.com/content.php?mode=news&id=2878 Che84 15:52, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If anyone has a picture of DeMerit playing for Watford or the national team, please do upload it and put it in the article. Miles Blues 06:54, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
