Highest paid Latin entertainment personality, not actress

Lest we get her confused with Sofia Vergara. J. Lo isn't just an actress per se; it's one of the many things she does.--Aichik (talk) 20:11, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

Surname in Early life

In the Early life section it says "Jennifer Lynn Lopez Rodriguez". She wasn't born with her mother's last name, she was just born with her father's last name "Lopez". Her parents were married at the time of her birth and did not get divorced until years later. Her parents didn't go with traditional Spanish naming customs when she and her sister were born either. 184.9.95.72 (talk) 19:52, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

Not done: The lead says Jennifer Lynn Muñiz (née Lopez) Sam Sailor Sing 21:06, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

I know that but my question is why Rodriguez was put into the early life if it's not her last name. I don't even know why her full name is in the early life. "Jennifer" or "Lopez" alone would suffice.184.9.90.119 (talk) 23:29, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

Please include that Jennifer Lopez is a songwriter because... She co-wrote numerous tracks from the "On the 6" album as well as both the original version of "Ain't It Funny" and the Murder Inc. Remix; she also co-wrote all but one song ("Loving You") on her "This Is Me... Then" album, she co-wrote two tracks on her "Rebirth" album, she co-wrote "One Love" from her "Love?" album and I think that is a good reason to include that in to her occupation section of the infobox. Any one agree? Thank you in advance :)

She only wrote songs for herself. To have her occupation listed as a songwriter, she would need to write for other artists. — Status (talk · contribs) 05:13, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
Well, songwriting credits can be deceiving. Just ask Rihanna ;) To start, do you have any credible sources that list her as a "songwriter" or discuss any aspect of her "songwriting"? And I disagree Status; you don't have to write songs for other artists to be considered a songwriter.--CallMeNathanTalk2Me 05:19, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
I could be wrong, but I remember reading that somewhere in regards to a similar situation with another artist. BMI, in 1999, listed her as a "recording artist/dancer/actress/songwriter". The only song I am aware of her sitting down and writing herself is Alive (Jennifer Lopez song). Andre Deyo, who is credited as co-writing Jenny from the Block, said in a recent book he published that he wrote the entire song, and that Jennifer just changed some of the lyrics. I think it's a fair statement to say that happens a lot in the pop music world. — Status (talk · contribs) 05:28, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

"In 2013 Lopez was immortalized in a Barbie doll"? C'mon, "immortalized"? Would it be more neutral and less WP:PUFFERY to say, "In 2013, Mattel issued a Barbie doll in Lopez's likeness"? --209.122.114.237 (talk) 20:44, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Record sales/net worth

I've opened a discussion on List of best-selling music artists regarding Lopez's inflated record sales. Additionally, I don't find a Yahoo blog/column to be reliable to support her net worth on a (hopefully soon) GA level biography. To add to that, the source states she's sold 55m records (which is really much closer to her actual sales). Please join the discussion, as I'd like all her articles to mirror what consensus leans towards (and facts which we'll soon uncover). As of now, due to what I imagine are low certification levels, she isn't even included at the base 50m records on the list. It's quite an issue. Cheers mates.--PeterGriffinTalk2Me 22:53, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

As discussed on said article, her certifications at nearly 32m copies. She's primarily a 2000s artist. Listing her with almost triple those sales is ridiculous and obviously not something considered reliable or what we practice on musicians pages. When she began her stint on Idol, they boosted her listings to 55m (which was still considered inflated) for promotional purposes. Since then, sources (through her label and to boost her brand/new album) have listed 70 & 80m. I am going to go ahead and implement 55m with reliable and recent sources. I see no reason for any objection.--PeterGriffinTalk2Me 08:07, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I also started a discussion on her discography page. Since only us two of us have commented, it's too soon to come to any kind of consensus. Newer sources are saying she has sold 80 million albums, so I'm not sure why we shouldn't go with that. They might be inflated, but that's purely speculation, while there are actual sources indicated she has sold 80 million albums, which isn't a stretch considering her enormous worldwide popularity over the last 15 years and that many other popular artists such as Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Britney Spears have albums sales around that number. Claiming that her sales are inflated, could be considered original research. I personally don't care all about the LOBSMA because like you said, she isn't even in the 50 million sales which even you say it's 55. That page only allows certain sources, none of which seem to give any album sales for Lopez.Mussobrennon (talk) 02:00, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

Reverts by Status

Various people have made edits, including spelling corrections and name corrections with sources, and Status has reverted these cumulative edits by different editors (myself, Inhakito, NeilN and Dr who1975), twice without a valid explanation ([2], [3]). I have mainly corrected her name as per the source that was previously cited for her married name (she applied to revert to her maiden name and her divorce has been finalized). Please discuss here. HelenOnline 05:46, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

  1. Being in a relationship with somebody does not make them a "partner".
  2. The divorce has been finalized and we know that she asked to restore her birth name, but there's no source stating it has yet to be done. None of the reports on her divorce being finalized mention her reciving her birth name back, so that is indeed WP:OR. The E! article implies the name change is separate from the divorce. — Status (talk · contribs) 21:56, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
@Status:
  1. I will leave the "partner" issue to Dr who1975 who added it. I don't know enough about the issue or the article history in this regard. If you had an ongoing issue with this edit, why revert other edits at the same time without explanation?
  2. The name change request was clearly part of the divorce proceedings per The Huffington Post article "Jennifer Lopez Requests Name Change In Divorce Documents". I don't see any reason why the courts would have declined her request, it is procedural and does not require her ex-husband's approval. It is a much safer assumption than assuming for some bizarre reason the courts refused her application (would that not also be OR since we cannot confirm it?). If she had not requested the name change, we would not even know what her married name was and it would never have appeared on the article. We could leave it under other names in the infobox if necessary but it should not appear at the beginning of the lead sentence.
I would appreciate other editors' input here so we can reach consensus. HelenOnline 07:00, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

Grammar

There is a grammatical error in the 2006-09 section. In "Lopez's sixth studio album Brave, released in October, become her lowest-charting album worldwide." the word 'become' is wrong. Should be 'became' or I think even better, 'was' since every album starts out lowest, it's just that this one stayed that way. I have not been auto-confirmed yet so I can't make the change myself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pauljackson1 (talkcontribs) 02:03, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Please removed the 4th sentence in 'Personal history' that states "She sued to prevent him from publishing a book about their marriage in April 2006, contending that it violated their confidentiality agreement" and replace with "In April 2006 she sued to prevent him from publishing a book about their marriage, contending that it violated their confidentiality agreement". Dubious claim for debut sales week of Como Ama Una Mujer

The lead and the article body includes the text: "received the highest first-week sales for a debut Spanish album in the United States." from PRWeb, however, Selena's Dreaming of You (1995) sold 331,000 units on its debuting week in July 1995, and to a more recent release (and all Spanish) before Como Ama una Mujer, Shakira's Fijacion Oral (2006) sold 164,000 units. Jennifer Lopez's album sold a mere 48,000 units in March 2007, considerably less than the record holders, thus the statement should be removed since the source does did not come from Nielsen SoundScan who is the authoritative music sales organization in the United States and did not state that Lopez's album made any history besides debuting in the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart. – jona 14:59, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

Those albums aren't the debut Spanish albums by those acts (Dreaming of You, a bilingual album, was Selena's fifth studio album and Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 Shakira's fifth Spanish album). According to Billboard, Como Ama una Mujer "set the record for the largest sales week for an act’s debut Spanish-language album. That record would later be broken by Romeo Santos, but Lopez still maintains the record among female artists’ debut Spanish-language albums." — Arre 11:20, 27 July 2017 (UTC)

Please remove the 307th citation, of Daily Mail; per se a poor unreliable source is inserted into the article, probably crammed into it without checking. This poorly formatted source which, in its integrity intrigues some intruders to slap out off it, there were two wholly detailed RfCs (that is, Request for Comments) 1st RfC, 2nd RfC, which unambiguously (and since the community takes the role over this) states "Daily Mail is an unreliable source, not suitable for inclusion into highly populated articles", that tabloid journal itself is not very much nuanced, containing factual inaccuracies. As is visible in that article (of Daily Mail) there are repeated characters and some possible misinformation crept into it. It has not even been edited or reviewed by their editorial board. It is not even supported by secondary references as WP:SECONDARY says to establish notability. Per those, please remove all the Daily Mail references. Thank you! 2401:4900:1800:B105:1:1:D957:2C5F (talk) 14:17, 31 January 2019 (UTC)

Not done: Not many editors will be willing to go through the article with a fine toothed comb in order to remove 9 separate claims all originating from the Daily Mail -- not to mention the re-writing of the text where claim-removal might leave gaping holes in the prose. Unless you're willing to take on that effort yourself and propose the re-written sections here on the talk page, then by all means go right ahead. Otherwise, the continuing inclusion of Daily Mail references, as I'm sure you know from the aforementioned RfC #2, are covered by WP:IAR. Regards,  Spintendo  08:09, 3 February 2019 (UTC)

Because the page appears to be protected and I basically never edit, I'm just starting here. Page in "early life" says her parents are from Puerto Rico but then emigrated to the US. The fly girls were not to rival the spice girls as the spice girls want out until 4 years later … so impossible to rival them 92.0.145.208 (talk) 23:04, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

Not done: Things exist past their creation time. From the source, The Bronx native’s first break was winning a national audition in the early ‘90s to join the Fly Girls, the in-house dance troupe for the TV comedy show “In Living Color.” Jeff Ayeroff, at the time co-head of Virgin Records with Jordan Harris, was approached about a record contract for the Fly Girls. Ayeroff recalls thinking of the group as a potential Spice Girls, but the deal fell apart. His interest in Lopez was renewed when he saw her as a dancer in the 1992 video for Janet Jackson’s “That’s the Way Love Goes” video, which was released by Virgin Records. But she started concentrating on acting. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 11:47, 30 March 2022 (UTC)

Absolutely not. This is no Victoria Beckham situation. Trillfendi (talk) 01:04, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
There shouldn't be any debate unless there's confirmation that she'll be using "Jennifer Affleck" professionally. Lots of married American women still use their birth names. Clear Looking Glass (talk) 08:04, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
Why “professionally”? Depends on a person and his/her personal/professional choices; let's ask them (him/her), Wiki is not destined to be a XXX designer, people in their flesh are, IMHO.☆☆☆—PietadèTalk 20:16, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
@Pietadè: - There's guidelines discussing name changes. WP:NAMECHANGES would be relevant to J.Lo's name change. She still appears to be using "Lopez" as her professional surname and all the sources provided on her marriage still refer to her as "Jennifer Lopez".
Otherwise, someone like Eva Longoria's page should be "Eva Bastón". Many famous Americans still use their maiden names professionally even if they have gone through a legal name change. As mentioned, the case of Victoria Beckham is because her married name is used professionally, including her brand as a designer. Clear Looking Glass (talk) 17:05, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
Agree, by now (06:09, 20 July 2022 (UTC)) ☆☆☆—PietadèTalk 06:09, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

Professionaly? She is now legally Affleck hahaha and Wikipedia is lying again… Gabica (talk) 23:24, 18 July 2022 (UTC)

Plenty of entertainers use their maiden name as their professional stage name in the public spotlight while changing their name after getting married, but because they're known professionally in their work by their maiden name you wouldn't change the title of a Wikipedia article, including Sophie Turner (actress; now Jonas but continuing to be credited professionally as Turner), Katharine McPhee (actress and musician; now McPhee Foster but still credited professionally as McPhee only), and Salma Hayek (actress; Hayek Pinault for over a decade but only ever credited as Hayek). Victoria Beckham is a case where she chose to refer to herself professionally with her married name and she has also used her name for branding in her career as a designer. PunkAndromeda (talk) 00:33, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

Heck, not even just actors. People whose professional life is dependent on people knowing their name typically don't change. Doctors come to mind, primarily, as a field where maiden (or married, if divorced) names are kept if it's what they established their career as. It's perfectly reasonable to assume that a woman who is known as "J Lo" because of her name might not go by her married name professionally, or maybe even not personally. If she publicly comes out and says she's using her married name, reliable sources will start referring to her as such, and then we can change it, per policy FrederalBacon (talk) 01:14, 24 July 2022 (UTC)

If those words offend you, I'm sorry but, as I mentioned in my edit summary, Wikipedia is not censored. Furthermore, it's not difficult to find other reliable sources that don't censor those words.[1][2][3][4][5] The original source of the quote, an interview with Ben Affleck in The Hollywood Reporter, also doesn't censor them.[6] If anything, People seems to be the outlier here in censoring those words when most other sources don't. In fact, I'll go replace it with The Hollywood Reporter right away. Bizarre BizarreTalk modern to me 23:43, 1 January 2023 (UTC)

Under "Early life" it talks about Jennifer Lopez's parents moving from Puerto Rico to U.S. "mainland." This is colonialist language. "Lopez returned to the big screen in 2012, starring alongside an ensemble cast in the film What to Expect When You're Expecting, which is based on the novel of the same name.[1]" - § 2011–2018: American Idol and Las Vegas residency

A novel is a "substantial work of narrative fiction", "what to expect" is a work of non-fiction. The ref as well as the linked articles call it either a "pregnancy guide" specifically or a "book" generally. Funnily enough, What to Expect When You're Expecting (film) § Pre-production mentions that the director was confused about this as well at one point.

The back half of the second sentence makes no sense as is. Replace "Super Bowl LIV halftime show" with "Super Bowl halftime show"? The last ref's title calls it the "Most-Watched Super Bowl Halftime Performance", anyway. Adding detail and/or a direct attribution might be better, though, compare List of Super Bowl halftime shows § Achievements.

Two suggestions:

1. In the section, Filmography, the sub heading Films starred seems clunky. Films in which Lopez has starred is better.

2. In the section, Written works, please change "Lopez has written a memoir and co-written one children's book so far." to "Lopez has written a memoir and co-written one children's book." The "so far" is unneeded; there is no indication in the article that she is writing another book. 76.14.122.5 (talk) 03:21, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
