She is not yet the Acting Mayor[edit]

John Tory has not resigned. The label under her photo a day or two or three ago said she was the acting mayor. I don't know who changed it back.

John Tory signs a letter --> gives it to the City Clerk --> City Clerk asks City Council to declare the office/seat vacant --> City Council declares the office/seat vacant --> That second...then Jennifer McKelvie becomes Acting Mayor. Not a second before. MiroslavGlavic (talk) 06:46, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Acting mayor is not a thing[edit]

As has been discussed at Talk:2023 Toronto mayoral by-election and confirmed by the City of Toronto in its press release, acting mayor is not a real position. She exercises some of the powers of the mayor, while in her role as deputy mayor, and the office of mayor is vacant.

"The Deputy Mayor remains Deputy Mayor while the Office of Mayor is vacant. The Deputy Mayor does not become the “Acting Mayor” or “Interim Mayor.”"WildComet talk 17:12, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for pointing that out. But Wikipedia bases sources on secondary sources (major news media), not just primary sources. The City says it is not an official title role, but as per the City official press release, “Under the Council Procedures (Chapter 27 of the Toronto Municipal Code), the Deputy Mayor automatically assumes certain rights, powers and authority given to the Mayor by Council following a Mayor’s resignation until the Declaration of Office for the successful by-election candidate is complete.” I recognize as per the official city press release the City does not designate the official title as there is no such formal title in the City of Toronto Act, but in theory this is what an acting mayor is. Save nomenclature, an acting mayor is a one who takes on the powers and duties in a caretaker capacity, and is the highest official at the time following the resignation of mayor. And importantly, what do we do when all official major mainstream news media say otherwise, despite the press release contradicting? All the major news refer as acting/interim/caretaker/temporary mayor. https://www.cp24.com/mobile/news/who-is-jennifer-mckelvie-what-we-know-of-the-scarborough-councillor-poised-to-take-over-as-acting-mayor-1.6269715

No one acts as mayor and no one takes over in a caretaker capacity. The deputy mayor only has powers granted by council, not powers assigned to the head of council via the City of Toronto Act, so she by definition cannot be called the deputy mayor.
If you want to look at secondary sources, any article that has come out since the city clarified no longer refers to her as "acting mayor", and explicitly mentions that isn't a real position. CP24, CityNews, CBC, The Star.
It's just factually incorrect to referencing a position that has no legal basis, is not recognized by the city, and is not used in recent reporting. —WildComet talk 21:18, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And just to add on to this from a Wikipolicy perspective, I'll not that WP:OLDSOURCES cautions that "older sources may be inaccurate because new information has been brought to light, new theories proposed, or vocabulary changed. In areas like politics or fashion, laws or trends may make older claims incorrect." —WildComet talk 21:26, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Fair. Appreciate you and thank you for bringing this to light. Yeungkahchun (talk) 21:48, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I chose not to be a part of it. But it's going to be interesting (beginning tomorrow), seeing the back-and-forth continuing dispute over whether to use "Acting Mayor of Toronto" in the infobox. Not to mention who will or won't be put in the 'successor' section of John Tory's infobox, between then & when the next mayor is chosen. Let's hope, the by-election will be held as early as possible. PS: I've requested further input from WP:CANADA & mentioned this discussion at John Tory's page. GoodDay (talk) 22:33, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Should we indicate in the deputy mayor infobox on Fri Feb 17 that she gains some powers of the mayor? Not sure the precedent for the info box regarding this, given the Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly gained mayoral powers during the Rob Ford saga, there is only a little notation on Norm Kelly’s page Yeungkahchun (talk) 08:37, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not change the main picture[edit]

The Deputy Mayor has requested that the photo remain as the one of her looking at the camera and smiling as opposed to the picture of her giving a presentation. 206.130.173.48 (talk) 13:00, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I prefer the previous image - the one giving a presentation. Big smiles and natural lightning in combination with bad quality of camera makes worse images compared to that taken indoors. Support revert to the previous one. A09 (talk) 15:22, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
To whomever is changing the photo: If McKelvie does like the main photo, have someone upload a suitable replacement. Usually a high quality photo will always take precedent over a low-res cell phone photo. Not saying you need to pay a professional photographer, just have a well framed photo, good lighting & solid or blurred background. PascalHD (talk) 17:01, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Reverted back to the Collision photo as per talk page consensus. —WildComet talk 17:42, 24 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Wildcomet, thanks for your comment. Just curious if Wikipedia automatically changes the picture to something higher quality or if people change it because the picture at collision looks high quality. I can try to find a new picture, but this one was selected by the Deputy Mayor herself, and shes asked me to make sure that the pictures from Collision are not used. 206.130.173.50 (talk) 14:29, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please see Wikipedia:Consensus. The higher quality image is what editors have agreed on in the talk page, in line with the manual of style MOS:IMAGEQUALITY which recommends the highest quality image possible.
As well, please be mindful of WP:COI, the conflict of interest policy. If McKelvie is your client, employer, or there is any kind of financial relationship, it should be disclosed.
If you would like to change the image to another one, I suggest you start a discussion on the talk page. —WildComet talk 19:37, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Change to Main Picture[edit]

Hi Wiki team.

Firstly, thank you for the information regarding the disclosing my COI and on how to ensure that a proper picture is used. I have uploaded a new, higher quality picture that should work within the guidelines you provided.

Full disclosure: I work for the City of Toronto in the Deputy Mayor's office.

Hoping we can find some consensus on this picture. Thanks. SRPResident (talk) 20:36, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
