Number of gears[edit]

Someone has entered to the info box that the car had a four speed automatic. According to my source it had a three speed automatic. I've not changed the entry because I am not sufficiently confident in my source. But does anyone have access to anything on this? With that size of engine, I think a four speed automatic would have been a bit unusual at this time, but I'm not an expert of big old Chrysler engines. I thought MkI was the only mark, but this was only from memory and I was wrong (so long as my interpretation of Italian wiki is right). There were a few prototypes with the four wheel drive system from the earlier body shape, but I don't know if any were commercialised. If it was still on Mk I in 1969 (which is implied tho NOT stated in the extract to which you direct me), then logically it would also have been on Mk I in 1966 (the date of my source). Italian Wiki thinks Mk I ran 1966 to 1968, Mk II 1969 - 1971. BUT Italian wiki merges the Inteceptor and the FF into a single article: which makes perfectly good sense. It's just the English and German wiki give them separate pages. So the information is powerfully persuasive that the automatic box was THREE speed but I guess not yet quite conclusive. Still, I think it's moving that way...

Speculation: I think the most likely is that for the Interceptor (as with the precious model) there could have been advertised a choice between a three speed automatic and a four speed manual, but they were mostly sold to Americans who don't like a stick shift in a big car. So in practice almost all all Interceptors went to US with a three speed Chrysler torqueflit box. Ditto the few FFs that actually found customers But that's speculation

Further reflection: If it was a Torqueflite system to go with the Chrysler engine - and I think it was - it must have been a 3 speed. Torqueflite is a three speed system. Charles01 (talk) 07:10, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
