He was a dentist, shouldn't this be mentioned? 66.182.31.11 02:50, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Age[edit]

Some sources say he was 79 while other sources say he was 80, please clear up this confusion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.237.34.211 (talk) 16:30, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If he was 80 then he would have had to have been born in 1933. ESPN says it was 1933[1]. ABC 7 Los Angeles says he was 80[2].--Subman758 (talk) 16:54, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently this is still in dispute. The New York Times says 1933 and 80. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/19/sports/basketball/jerry-buss-longtime-lakers-owner-is-dead-at-80.html Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 18:41, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The L.A. Lakers also say 1933 and 80. https://twitter.com/Lakers Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 18:47, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
KTLA initially reported it as age 79, then changed it to age 80 http://ktla.com/2013/02/18/lakers-owner-jerry-buss-dead-at-79/#axzz2LHIZC1C5 Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 18:49, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Birth date[edit]

Because of the discrepancy in birth dates, I asked David Wharton of the Los Angeles Times, who broke the story. He confirms 1933, age 80: "We found multiple bios with two different birthdays. Confirmed the correct one with the family." —[AlanM1(talk)]— 17:32, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've received similar communications of confirmation from Bloomberg news for 1934. Lulaq (talk) 18:47, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
These journalists are smart people, what could be going on here? Lulaq (talk) 18:49, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Just to be clear, did Bloomberg confirm directly with the family (as LAT did)? Who is your contact @ Bloomberg? —[AlanM1(talk)]— 18:51, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
They confirmed with "public records". Considering the Buss family can't get details correct in the media when negotiating a contract for a coach in their own family, I'd go with public records over an anonymous family member. (You knew someone was going to bring in Phil Jackson into this.) Lulaq (talk) 19:26, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. We don't know what supposed "public records" are being cited, and I think that going with a primary source is far more likely to be accurate. What happens and is reported about contract negotiations is hardly a similar subject. I've emailed BBerg's most recent article's reporter, who hasn't yet replied. I'll copy his editor. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 19:38, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Do we know which family member is being cited? The Wyoming interview is what makes me believe age 79 currently. Lulaq (talk) 20:33, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Does it matter? What third party is more accurate than a family member that was good enough for the LA Times (a second party) to run with in the headline for an LA icon? And ABC News, ESPN, and the New York Times, among others. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 22:23, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Public records and an interview with the individual is more reliable than an anonymous family member. What is disconcerting though is, 24 hours later, if you do a search online, you still see a dispute between these two years. At this point, I would like for us to see a primary, but verifiable, source (as opposed to a news article). How can this be so hard (for the media community, not editors)? Lulaq (talk) 00:00, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

While they did not respond to me, and did not comment anywhere on the discrepancy, Bloomberg has now changed their article (as of 2013-02-19T05:00 UTC) to show 80.[3] —[AlanM1(talk)]— 13:47, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Update: This pic of his headstone confirms the 1933 birthdate in the article. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 08:46, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It says his 79th birthday was in 2013, it would mathematically be his 80th birthday. This is in the section regarding his personal life and death. 24.59.97.149 (talk) 01:02, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently there were conflicting reports about his birth year, so the article went through some changes while that was sorted out. It says 80 now. RudolfRed (talk) 01:21, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We're saying 80 now because a preponderance of news outlets are saying 80, but a significant number are still saying 79. To channel Donald Trump here, we need to see a birth certificate to resolve this. (This issue is still under investigation. Lulaq (talk) 03:21, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Mormon?[edit]

He was born in SLC. Seems notable whether he was or was not.69.255.170.233 (talk) 14:33, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hell, we don't know what year he was born and you expect us to find this out? Lulaq (talk) 03:13, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Age disclaimer?[edit]

What is a succinct way to add a disclaimer saying some sources still cite 1934. Lulaq (talk) 03:17, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bob Steiner specifically confirms Jerry Buss was 80. [4]. Lulaq (talk) 03:22, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
