John Hollowbread returns to the Dell[edit]

In 1969 John Hollowbread returned to the Dell as Captain of Mullard Sports in the Southampton Senior Cup Final. For weeks before the final the publicity was about Johns return and his renewed confrontation with Brian Flood (aprevious player from the Saints) then playing for Redbridge Rovers.

The game started badly for Mullard Sports going three down after only eight minutes, the third and final goal of the three was a long range effort from the halfway line which John went down on one knee to save, as the ball reached his body John keeled over and the ball slipped below his body into the net. John had collapsed with the same knee problem which saw him retire from professional football at the very same end.His playing career was then at an end.

Mullards then went on to reach 3 - - by the interval and finally lost the match 5 - 2. I can verify the facts as I took over in goal when John was carried off for the remaining 82 minutes.

John was a credit to the game of football and without doubt if John had not of played for Mullards at short notice one day Mullards Sports would not have been the force in Southampton league football that they became —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.120.8.45 (talk) 14:45, 25 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
