The "REAL" John Proctor

Article has been updated to reflect the life of the REAL John Proctor (and not the totally fictionalized version from the Crucible). I have delete the string of comments regarding the previous inaccuracies as this information has been removed. I have spent years researching John and his family, as he is my grandfather. Family Executions

The article states: "In 1692 141 complaints were filed; twelve were against relatives of the Proctor family. Only John and Elizabeth (Bassett) Proctor were convicted, and only John was executed."

However, Although in the list of extended family members, Rebecca Nurse is present. She was executed for witchcraft. Later in the article, it mentions a petition that she signed, but again, she had been executed and could not have done that. I'll give it a few days before changing it, so if anyone has anything to say, it's still here. ADifferentMind (talk) 19:18, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Wives

Ancestry is a good source of information but you have to be careful about any info that comes from the Family Data Collections. These are simply collections of information submitted by other users -- with no documentation to show where they got the information from. Thanks for the links to the other documents. I will update the article to add these as inline citations. John definitely did not divorce his first 2 wives and I have removed that line. sharrison 24 Sep 2013

The first paragraph states that John Proctor divorced his first two wives. I am not finding any information to support that claim and to the contrary both of his earlier wives died shortly after giving birth to his child.

His first wife Martha Giddons died Jun 13 1659 and her death registry reads "Martha, wife of John Prockter, [dye]d the 13 June, 1659" with an image of the records. Their child Benjamin Proctor was born three days prior on Jun 10 1659

He married his second wife, Elizabeth Thorndike, on Dec 1 1662 and and

Elizabeth Thorndike died Aug 30 1672 and a month and a half after the birth of their son Thorndike Proctor on Jul 15 1672.

He married his third wife Elizabeth Bassett on April 1 1674. and

No record of divorces can be found; it is highly unlikely for a man of that time period to divorce a pregnant wife; death after childbirth was not uncommon and unlikely that a man would divorce a woman recovering from childbirth. The statement "he divorced his first two wives" is unsupported and extremely suspect.

Sarah Bassett

It is well established that Sarah Bassett, sister of Elizabeth Bassett who married John Proctor, was married to Thomas Elwell in 1675. They had seven children identified in his will. She appears in the will of their father, William Bassett, dated February 10, 1701 as "Sarah Elwell" and received forty shillings. She was not married to a "Henry Hood" as shown in the section: Accusations Against other Proctor Family Members. The published references for this information are numerous.
